Bass in a saloon car

Hi all - first post here and am looking for some advice on how to get the best bass.

Just bought a new car and am about to install my equipment I took out my old car. Thing is, my old car was a hatchback and my new car is a saloon/sedan. You guys across the pond know that Brit terminology? Boot=trunk etc!!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif Just to clarify, my old hatchback has a boot/trunk that is part of the car's interior. My new sedan car's trunk is separate from the car's interior..... Man this is long winded!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

I'm wondering how decent bass is going to get to me as I'm listening..... it will either have to travel through the rear seats or through a solid rear shelf which I recon must cut a load of sound out......

Should I cut a few holes in this rear shelf to let the bass get into the car interior? How many? How big? Will it make the sound muddy and boomy?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Cheers

Mark

Someone must be able to offer a bit of advice on how to deal with bass in a sedan!! Have even changed my title and first post to say sedan!

Lots of power!! I've had good luck keeping the boxes narrower and more long. Subs up, ports back or up. Dynamat the crap out the the boot lid. If there are speakers in the rear shelf take them out. Just my .02 (not sure on the conversion of two cents into british pounds, sorry) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Nice to have you on the forums.

Errr, with current conversion rates about 1p - but we also say "2 pennys worth".//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif I have lots of power - well for me anyway! (1200w). I unfortunately have no speakers in my rear shelf..... it is totally sealed, that was why I was thinking of cutting out some holes to let the sound travel through........

I will definitely investigate soundproofing the boot lid - I can imagine this may well rattle a bit!

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif at the 2 cents thing

anyhow...how much bass do you want? an 18 in my saloon car seems to do the trick haha. if you can i would cut out a portion of the rear deck, but ensure it is well braces after doing so. perhaps weld a frame around the peice you cut out. i would do one large cutout in the center. not too sure how large. have you ever seen steave meades civic? he did the same thing and he had two 18s facing forward with the back seats up.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/greedy.gif.5a53e6246569d7ab79867170f3b06629.gif

once you do that...you could do a number of different sub combinations and they should all sound good/get loud

Depending on how much time/effort you are willing to put into it. An Infinite baffle setup may be a good option for you. There are a lot of good threads about it on here that can be found by a quick search. BTW, Congrats to your team for getting promoted back to the top flight again, I was dissappointed when they took the drop last time round.
