Since im still pretty new to all this i need some help telling what amps to stay away from.

now i no how to chose what amp i want based on specs n such but what makes one 1000watt amp better than the next and how can i tell. i.e. i kicker amp is gonna be much better than a boss.

basicly i need help for when im looking for an amp, not to make the mistake n get a shitty one that seems good.

The amps onboard fusing will tell you just about all you need to know about an amp. I.E. if your looking at an amp and it says it does 1000 rms, but it only has like two 25 amp fuses, it will not do 1000 watts.

Well for one price

If a Kicker 1000 costs $250 and a Boss 1000 costs $90

do you really think both are going the same power?

Most 1000 watt amps NEW, cost $150-225, depending on brand, who you get it from, and so on.

not 100% true, some kid at my school had an 1800 watt performance teknique amp that claimed 1800rms, and had 4 30A fuses, in reality it probably did 600.

Most shit amps will claim 1200W (sony) but they are talking about Peak or Peak to Peak wattage not rms. a kicker that claims 1200w is going to be claiming rms. RMS is the true wattage and max is the bloated number. A/C wattage is a bit more confusing to figure than DC. For instance say you have that sony which is claiming 1200W Peak to Peak, you divide that by two and multiply by .707 coming out to about 425 rms for a round about. do the reverse for the kicker which is 1200rms. Divide by .707 multiply by two and by sonys standards kicker makes a 3300watt amp. Those are by no means accurate but give you an idea. another way to check assuming the amp is not over fused is to take the fuses, add them together and then multiply by 14.4 or whatever voltage your car is at. so 20 x 14.4 = 288rms before voltage drops etc.

also realize that shitty amps are built with shitty transistors and other components. one amp might be rated for 600rms but if you play it there its likely to blow where as another company (sundown, rockford, kicker, etc) might be rated for 600rms but actually put out 800 and be able to play there reliably.

most decent cheap 1000 watt amps New may cost $150-225 , but I doubt you are going to buy a RF t1000 or DD m1a and so on for $150 New, with any kind of warranty

this. watts=volts x amps, you have an amp (for the sake of easy math) with a 10 A fuse, your alternator puts out 14.4V, 14.4 x 10= 144 watts being the max your amp will put out.

to get a little closer estimation, you include efficiency, take the sundown SAZ 3000d, its recommended fuse size is 300A and its ~ 86% efficient, so 14.4x300x.86=3715, so in ideal conditions the SAZ 3k can put out up to 3700 watts before the fuse will burn
