avic z1 or no?

I just got a new car, 01 jetta glx fully loaded. Friend and I was talkign and i would like to build what i suppose would be a "SQ" setup. I want it to sound good. i dont have to have insane bass that is going to crack mirrors or win competitions. I jsut want me to be able to really enjoy my music in my car. He suggested the pioneer avic z1 system or even the z3. From what i have seen the z1 sits at about 600 normally buying one used. I was wondering jsut how good this unit is. If i need to run away from it or grab one asap. I am laso very open to suggestions. i would like to stay with a double din headunit as mys tock radio is double din.
