Due to gas prices, I have been considering selling my 97 Toyota 4runner to get something more efficient. I get 18-22, looking for something close to thirty. Talking with my brother, he said that he may be willing to trade me his car + cash (around 1000 bucks). While it wont be 30ish, it will be better at 20-24 mpg. It is a 96 Mustang Cobra with the Mystic paint. He has it lowered, upgraded suspension, a few bolt on mods such as intake, flowmasters, and lower gearing. It has 118k miles. My 4runner isnt much extra, I have a aftermarket head unit, amp (his) and some subs installed, nothing to really add value. I have 123k miles on it. Do you think this would be a good deal on my part? Here are pics of both, thanks for your input.

If you go with the mustang your gonna lose 4 wheel drive, a lot of cargo room, the rear seats, you won't be able to take it off road. Not sure if that would be a problem for you or not. They could be be things you can live with. On the other hand the mustang's a nice car with a little better gas mileage(like 2MPG). In this situation I don't think the MPG would matter much, it's which vehicle you would prefer.

I am going to check on insurance either Monday or Wednesday. I am just tired of the 4runner (only had it a year). It is nice, but ride isnt that great, it doesnt have much power, and 2mpg is quite a bit actually (atleast $200 savings a year with gas at $3.25). I like the mustang. I was actually looking at celicas, but for the price difference it would be the same to make this deal. I absolutely love that car, just dont know how well I would like it as my ONLY car. If it sounds like a decent trade, I will do it because I would think it would be fairly easy to sell that car if needed. I never go offroad, my 4runner is 2wd. I do not use the room. I have used the back end like once in the past year. Seats, almost always by myself or with the g/f, every now and then 3 people, so seating is no big deal. It is easy for me to want to do this just to have a head turner. I am afraid that may take over what I actually need. Anyone else, thanks.

If that's how you really feel, I'd check on insurance. If their not gonna **** you I'd go for it. It seems like you don't need the room and your tired of it. If you like the mustang trade it up and put the xtra money towards the system or insurance.

I truly feel I like it better, however, I am not positive I am thinking right. It is easy to think right now that it would just be so cool to have a fast sportscar that will impress people. I dont think that is the reason behind my decisions, but it may be, which is why I am looking for others opinions. I realize it is up to me, but a little help doesnt hurt. My thoughts are to use this for the next 3 years while in college, then buy something as a daily driver and keep the stang for a weekend car, something to relax in. Thanks everyone.

I would love that, but he is in FL, I am in AR, 900 miles one way. I think I will like the cobra much better and will be willing to spend a grand just to get, any gained mpg will be considered a plus. I am not sure at this point, but the sportscar does sound nice, but still not sure if it will be practical for me. Thanks everyone.

Who told you that Mustang will get that good of gas? Those numbers they throw out there are just standards and not always right anyway. My car is supposed to get 24-30 and I get more 18-24 in a 4 cylinder. I have babied it as welll and even had it checked out to see if something is wrong with it. They say nothing and this is from 2 different dealerships, not to mention my dad shop. So.............. I wouldn't do it, except for the fun factor of the Stang. Those tires from the pics look bald too. Maybe is just the pic though. I also hate that color as I had that on a show car, when it was cool. Kinda girlish now IMO. I would keep what you have. Matter of fact, I will trade my fiances car for it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

A ****ing purple Mustang? Dude, that's a straight-up chick car. I guess if you're looking to pick up young hunky football players, that might be a good trade. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Seriously, though... You're using a $200 a year savings on gas as a potential reason? If you really want the 'Stang, that's one thing, but what is that, like $17 a month? Seriously, this is a big factor to you in choosing a vehicle?

Oh well, to each his own.
