You should be able to tell by ear if your clipping your sub. Don't waste your money on those indicator things..

If you can't tell your clipping the sub then buy an o-scope and set the gains properly

 
musical shouldn't really kill them, and 1200w to that sub should be fine. I assume it is a copper not aluminium. Do you hear any sounds like it is losing control? if not it must just be thermal.
Well mine is off of a 9.1. I have no heat issues. Even after 30+ mins of playing.
