Which would usually be a good thing in an SQ system . The good sq setups I have heard sound as if there are no subs at all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
exactly what i was thinking... sounds like the low freq. wraps around you from all angles.along with mids & highs

and most of my speaker knowledge was from the 90's were i am still stuck with most of my equipment being old school PG
Don't get discouraged by some of the posts so far. I mean no offense and you can learn a lot hanging out here and some other forums on the net. Try to look at it as an opportunity to bring your knowledge base a bit more current if you're feeling a bit behind the times.

i supose there isnt such a thing as underdriven but i was trying general comment of underpowering a sub that would require 2k watss and only feeding it maybe half . and sayin it woul make the output lower than what you would expect it to play.

and my point was not to dis acreedit the xxx

As siad above, which is it, the sub would overpower the fronts too much, or the sub wouldn't get loud enough to make the OP happy? You cant have it both ways.
Yes, in the 90's alot of people erroniously thought 15's and 18's were sloppy, slow, etc etc. but Im sorry thats no excuse, dude its coming up on 2008 in case you didn't notice. Are you gonna play catch up your whole life?

In any event, I suppose that's about as close to a "I was wrong" as we'll see from you. At least it was something...

Hey if I can make you laugh Polecat, Ive done my part for the day. Maybe this thread wasn't so worthless after all. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I just called my old 3rd grade science teacher. He did a few experiements with chemicals and beekers while on the phone. He said the liquid came out green, which means you're either wrong, or pregnant. That's proof enough for me.
classics...sheer classics...

oh im not discouraged at all but my point to this thread is i think i was mis under stood the bashed on wich in turn made me defensive.

i never claimed to know every thing. especially about all the newer drivers out because i too a few year hiatuse from car audio when my 1st 2 kid were born.

hence i also got out of installing and into a job that had better health & retirement benifits.

i already stated i would admit being wrong.

but all the bashing at first kinda got me defensive. and i am still trying to learn more as all of you are.

so do subs really have more excursion when playing lower frequencies? did we ever decide if this was correct?
Depends are the subs round or square ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

That's cool. There's no doubt that the gang attack approach comes on quick here and anyone is bound to be defensive. Just forget about this for now and try to take in as much knowledge as you can.

Family takes precedence but it's good that you're still interested in the hobby; that's why we're all here in the first place.

That's cool. Just remember, the 'bashing' started due to you stating you ARE an expert. But obviously you've come around to realizing you have alot to learn, as we all do. Well, Polecat prolly knows everything worth knowing, but the rest of us are still working on it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Cheers.

I KNOW that's a trick question, being as its coming from you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif So yeah, Im leaving that one alone. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Trying to bait someone today, Tracy? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Excursion requirements do increase for a given amount of output as frequency decreases (assuming several constants). In general, this has been approximated as a quadrupling of excursion required for every shift an octave lower, but this is way too general. Things have a tendency to change once we start introducing various resonances into the system. I mean, you look at any system with a Helmholtz resonator and you typically see excursion is less at Fb than it is at Fb's second or third harmonic.

It's a pretty complex concept, beyond the scope of the post I'm prepared to make now, but there are drawbacks to every approach, whether it's increasing effective piston area, changing the motor geometry, or just introducing the product to a more efficient system. The simple answer is that we must displace more air at lower frequencies and this can be accomplished any number of ways.
