Audio doesnt work with cable but does with DVD???

can anyone help me out here .. A guy i work with calls me tonight ... says that his audio on his westinghouse 30" works fine with his dvd player but not at all with cable ... he has the tv hooke up directly to the wall no cable cox involved what so ever and the cable does not run through the dvd player

what could be the problem
