Aren't all HU 50 Watts x 4 Max. (20W x 4 RMS)?

The wattage listed is the max power of all 4 channels so basically getting just over 16ish watts max per channel. Kinda ok for basic listening with very efficient speakers as long as you aren't expecting much in the way of sound other than background sound.

I would prefer a head unit sans power. Put the extra room and cost savings to better use.

No... There used to be a Pioneer that did 33 RMS, 60 max x4.

Their was a Panasonic one a couple of years ago that was 38 RMS and 75 peak I believe.

But most are 16-25 now...not worth it to use all that space for an amp when they can make one and get more of your money.

I guess what I was getting at was the fact that I want to keep my HU in my car because changing it cause serious headaches and I lose a lot of functions of the car.....

I went to an audio store recently and was told that the only reason to really change your HU is if you want one that does something that your current HU doesn't do...

Then I come on here and seems everyone is stating that in order to get the best sound you need to change your factory HU to an aftermarket...

So my question was basically, dont all HU (factory installed and aftermarket) have the approximate same power ratings and as long as you are amping it, it doesn't really matter...?

The HU I am looking to keep is a factory installed Monsoon HU (well GM with the Monsoon logo on it) in a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi....
