are my speakers underpowered

Wow iidnt expect that response at all. I felt the speakers were not at fault. They somewhat high end from from sony and i read nothing but great reviews. The speakers are really clean. My max is about on my h/u is 62 and i stop at about 45. Anything higher it gets fussy. I believe my problem is my amp and im still under the return periodso im sending it back for something a bit stronger
Most of the "good reviews" you're reading are probably from people who don't know a thing about audio and have never heard high end stuff like focal or cdt, no offense at all just letting you know the reviews on amazon or whatever should never be trusted haha

Sharkman, I'm not the one to get upset when people don't take advice, but you chose an amp pretty much just like the one you just sent back. I hope there's an improvement for you though.

BoomTaco, I'm no expert, but I know enough to follow the rule. From what I've read, if you don't have enough power (car electrical or weak amplifier) and want to get more output out of your speakers, you turn up the volume. To my understanding, some DC current propagates to the speakers and that's what causes the damage. Others may have additional info.

Another option is ebay for old amps that work fine. I got 50x2 at 4 ohm zapco amp for $41 shipped last week. A zed made us acoustics 150x2 dkr 90. I let a linear power 65x2 go for 60 something because i just didnt need it. But if used doesnt bother you you can get some premium amps for cheap if you look. There are some higher level and lower amps but if it says zed, zapco, or linear power it is better than anything in its price range that you are shopping in.

I don't mean to disappoint you, but you got pretty low end stuff and I think you may have expected too much out of it. A friend of mine just installed Pioneer TS-D1702C in his car, they were only $100 shipped and rated at only 60W per side. Given they are being powered by a better amp, but I can guarantee they will be loud enough for you. Sony makes pretty bad car audio products and that's why they're never recommended. I wouldn't get better speakers with that amp and I wouldn't get a better amp for those speakers. If you want louder and better sounding, I'd get other equipment.
actually sony GS speakers are pretty good, a lot clearer and better sounding then alpine type Rs and focal 165 CA1s in a direct side by side comparison. Sony ruined their image with their xplode lines but they are generally trying to clean it up. That being said, there are speakers out there that will do the job better with similar or lower price then these but still, these are no slouch.

OP whats your head unit and whats your GF's head unit? I know that after I replaced my older pioneer head unit with a much better one, the mids and highs are a heck of a lot louder on the same amp. What are your music sources? aux, bluetooth, cd? Jensen is usually not a brand that i would go to but it should at least provide more power then head unit power, I suspect something else is the problem here.
