Are grills necessary for rear speakers?

My Apline 6x9 rear speakers did not come with grills.  The speakers will never be touched by anything, so they don't need to be protected from being hit by something.  The speakers are mounted on the panel that covers my trunk, so they are always exposed to the sun during the day, and I live in a hot area.  Do grills protect speakers from UV rays, reduce temperature by blocking out most sunlight, and reduce dust buildup?  Thanks for any replies.
