Maybe I missed something, but I'm pretty sure the HDC3 15 was built around getting loud.
Yea, you missed it. It's designed to be a loud azz daily driver sub. SQL is the often referred to term. MTX RFL= SPL sub... HDC3= Loud Daily sub

Terra, I would try it out in your personal car first, just to avoid any problems and to verify that it will work before letting her turn loose on the volume knob.

so people cant get loud in sealed boxes? im just trying to understand why it wont work in a low power sealed application...if the answer is just completely no then ill have to rebuild the car to allow for more space or something
sealed boxes can get very loud. The reason you want a ported over sealed for that sub is due to the ebp of the driver which is the fs divided by the qes. If that number is closer to 50 that sub is better suited for sealed and if its closer to 100 vented is the way to go(there are exceptions). Now any sub can play in any box. A sealed box is not optimal for the hdc3 but will work none the less. Most guys here want the most from their subs so they go ported however i'm very confident that your friend will be happy with that sub in that sealed box off 900 watts. Hell i've heard L7's(which most recommend ported boxes) in a sealed box and the sub moved a lot of air. Sell her the sub, hook everything up for her and she'll be fine. Are there better subs for her amp and space requirements, for sure. Will the hdc3 put out enough bass for a first system off 900 watts, i say hell yeah. Don't hesitate, hook the girl up.

In my experiance with the 2 subs my HDC3>RFL in SPL.

No its not completly a one note wonder but my BTL sounded alot better. Yea its aimed for daily use but is is an SPL based driver.

annnnd that is the answer ive been looking for. not necessarily because it gives me the go ahead but because he actually has reasons to support his opinion. thanks..

That's what I meant by SPL, I was trying to stress the fact that the HDC3 is made much more for loudness than sound quality.

I see a sundown 1500 in your sig, how much power did you have on your btl?

I've played with the original HD3's in small sealed boxes. Never bothered with the new C woofer when I was testing it. It really didn't work good. I cut a hole in the box and stuck an external port on it for comparison purposes, and it worked much better ported although the box was really a little too small.

My advice would be to go ahead an build the box ported. Leave the port a little on the small side, like 12 to 13 in^2 of port per cubic foot of net space, instead of the 16-18 in^2 that is recommended. Also keep the tuning low, like in the 34hz range. It should still sound decent. Not ideal, but it would still be better than a sealed box.
