anyone repaint their own car?

holy batman expensive. so i've heard $2000, $1000 for the setup, how much would it really cost for an ok setup? its not like i'm repainting bill gates enzo, i just wanna throw some black over my factory green i have. and i guess paint isn't too expensive?

so this http://www.amazon.com/Spray-Equipment-SAT61168-SATAJet-Gravity/dp/B0002T5W8Y

and a good compression air tank, and the paint right? well as far as the painting goes..prep is another story.

I've never painted a whole vehicle but I will probably do my truck soon. As stated above, get a good gun. I use a devilbiss. You can go to http://www.spraygundepot.com and look and some they have there. I would recommend using a 1.4mm tip for the basecoat and clear. Try to do all sanding by hand and not with a DA. Using a DA can cometimes lead to waves. Also use a good primer. Sand down wet with 400. After sanding the primer down I use Dupont Final Clean to wipe everything down. This removes any sanding dust, oil, or any other residue. Other than that just make sure you take up everything really good that you don't want paint on. DO NOT USE LAQUER THINNER TO CLEAN THE VEHICLE. Make sure you have a VERY clean spray booth to work in as well. You will end up getting some trash in it but if you aren't using a professional booth there is not much you can do about it. If it is your first time painting I would also recommend doing some practice. Base coat/clear coat is easiest to spray. Also make sure that you have a good air compressor that will keep up with your HVLP gun. I know mine requires 13 cfm so they really take large compressors. You can see some boxes and things that I have painted at http://www.undefinedcustoms.com/memberrides/daryl

You can also buy videos from http://www.hokpaint.com that can teach you how to paint and proper technique. Just do some searching on the web and you will find all the answers you need. Make sure you buy good paint as well. Don't go cheap, there is a difference. I use Dupont clearcoat. Nason also makes a good clear that use to be Dupont Chroma Clear last year. Basically Dupont developed a newer version and moved the old one down to Nason.

for my bug ill be using Dupont Chroma Premier, its ballar shit donated by my school //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif ... Gotta love a refinish curiculum that is backed by dupont.

I was told omni isnt too bad for the price, but i havent used it so i cant vouche //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

alot of ppl above dont know what they are talking about.

i did a 57 chevy about a week ago, and it anit hard. take all the chome off the truck, and tape around the windows and what you dont want painted. then use sand paper to get the clear-coat off of the old paint. when the clear coat comes off it'll look kinda chalky. then paint it to you color you want.

ps thier are two kinds of paints, one has the clear-coat in it, and the other doesnt, yall have to add it yourself. did all of the painting in a day. the preping took a day before

and i bought the paint gun at advance

and no you dont need a big air-compressor as stated above

A few things I would like to add. I worked in a body shop for the last 3 years. I'm not an expert, but learning.

1. Amen on the spray booth. Essential for a quality job. You can use $300/gal paint but have it look like crap w/o a booth.

2. Omni (now shopline from PPG) has okay products, but the base isn't great for coverage. My personal truck is PPG Global Base (Expensive) with Omni clear. Looks fine and the truck is garaged and waxed, so it should stay in good shape.

3. Guns are expensive, the ones used by myself were borrowed and cost around $600, but one had been used daily for the past 10 years. Quality counts.

4. Find a good shop, talk to them about what you want to do and see if you can cheapen it up by doing some prep work. They probably won't guarantee the finish if you prep it, but it would be cheaper.

5. Single stage doesn't have clear mixed in it, it is a single stage of paint that has glossy properties. It differs from base/clear in that base is pure color, and clear is only clear, meant for protection and shine. You can't mix base with clear to get single stage, but you can clear over single stage.

6. Nobody mentioned sealer. A good sealer will ensure everything sticks and makes a uniform base for color matching and paint compliancy. Also allows for less paint usage in it allows for better coverage.

7. I have painted my own and it is awesome, but it was done in a professional booth, with professional tools, with professional paint, and a professional looking over my shoulder. The following pictures is how she looks, no buffing, straight from booth to assembly.

me and my dad painted his truck it wasnt hard as we thought it would be it turned out pretty good, alot better then what it looked, just the prep work is what sucked

yea i want to paint my project vehicle, but i have no experience i might pay someone to paint it and i can practice on the prep work, i heard thats the main part of having a good finish, i need to learn how to add metal to rusted out spots and preping it for the smoothing out, and the best primer to use
