alright well i got a ps2 from my friend to put in my car and i think the laser is out of adjustment how can i adjust the laser correctly to read the disc? the reason i think it is the laser out of adjustment is b/c when you power on the game all it says is "reading disc...." and it doesnt ever load. any websites i can go to or anyone know what i can do?

mods please move this if it isnt the right forum.

well i am 99.9% positive that the disc laser is not aligned correctly... b/c it doesnt read the disc at all. i could understand if it said disc read error or anything but it just keeps reading and reading the disc.

The only way it could be the alignment is if that thing was dropped pretty hard.

Like i said.... if the lens is really dirty it obviously cant read the disc. This happens sometimes with dusty houses or with people who smoke alot

Aligning the laser isn't difficult, but it is annoying as crap. I'll give you some instructions, but make sure it's a last resort. Once you open the case, a lot of Gaming stores won't buy it back or anything.

1) remove the 8 small plugs on the bottom of the ps2 (4 plastic and 4 rubber)

2) remove the 8 screws (4 long and 4 short) (all phillips)

3) carefully lift off the top. Be VERY careful of the small ribbon cable that connects the power and eject buttons to the cpu.

4) with the power on, press the eject button, and then turn off the power while the tray is open.

5) remove the four screws in the CD tray top (eyeglass phillips head driver)

6) lift off the plastic, and you will see the laser. A white dial is at the top of the laser movement contraption.

7) mark the dial with a marker, so you know where you start.

8) turn the dial until you see the laser drop down. As the laser passes the wider tooth, it drops down to the bottom, and starts over going up again.

9) Now comes the fun part. Put in a silver bottomed disc, hold the tray on top (you don't have to screw it down), and boot up. If it doesn't work: eject, power down, turn it one click, try again.

10) repeat step nine about 100 times until it works with silver, DVD, and blue bottomed discs.

Remember...last resort!

Good luck.

thanks alot man. i knew how to do that but i didnt know that dial was for aligning the laser i thought it was for the angle of the laser. ill try it and see if it works.

It is the angle of the laser...I thought thats what you had meant when you said align. Other than that, I don't think you can actually move the laser around on it's drive mechanism (I guess you could change the rubber bushings but...).

My PS2 had a lot of not recognizing and "Disc Read Error" issues, and those steps solved my problem.

ya i think it is out of alignment like the laser moves on the little track to read the disc i think it has been bumped on the track and now is not reading right. does that make any sense.

i have a question too. every time i play a game it stops reading it and when i take the game out it looks like the bottom of the disk got burned. is this because the laser is too strong or is something else wrong with it?
