Anyone have any experience building computers?

Yeah, you will have NO problem setting up a sweet rig on that.
Have you figured out hard drives yet?

If not, consider the western digital raptor drive as your boot drive and get a larger slower drive as your storage.

A 74gb Raptor with a 400 or 500 gb storage would hold just about everything (unless you really like to download)
ahh I need to hard drives?

I'll follow back up on this in the morning. I have to be up in about 6 1/2 so I should get some sleep.

Let me know what you have ordered and I will put together what is missing.

To answer your what OS question though. Vista will allow you to run more visually stunning games, but XP will run the same games faster (just won't be directX 10).

Not a ton of games are DX10 yet, so it may not be an issue to you. Also, the games that are dx10 can also be played on XP just running DX9.

Search DX10 Vs. DX9 and look at the difference.

whats the differnce between 8mb cache and 16mb>?
Think of it like RAM. that is the amount of quick access memory in the hard drive. The more you have the more it can quickly access before spinning the drive again. More and more drives are going to higher amounts....16, 32 etc. Also, solid state storage built-in to the hard drives will be out in mainstream more and more. This will allow for the drive to not have to spin at all for long periods of time. Great for things like laptops.

Ok cool thanks for all the help! Ill put together a list of everything I got so far tomorrow morning and you can tell me whats missing

Does this case look ok?

I like the looks of it and I need one on the cheaper side cause I am already at $930 and I still need an operating system
Sure. Not my kinda case, but it will do the job. Cases real purpose is to hold everything and try to keep everything cool. Ease of install and looks are just extras.

If you want to run XP, let me know. I can always send you a CD :p

Sounds good. Are you ordering as you go? Because if your going to get everything from newegg wait and order all at once so you get combined shipping. Plus I can usually find the exact same stuff on there a bit cheaper.

[i'm an ******* because I made a comment about how you are advertising the fact that you have very little experience building computers yet telling him to PM you as if you're an expert ?

Gotcha ...

Glad I could help //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
No, I would say Windows XP as it takes less resources. You can run it on a system that you are putting together but your frame rates and overall load times will take a bit of a hit.

Until they get some of the fat off of Vista, I would still stick with XP (64-bit if your over 3gb).

Vista's only real improvement is that it runs DX10 games (and is currently the only OS to do so). So you will not get the full effects of the DX10 card without it.

I keep forgetting to put this in....get an aftermarket cooler. Tomshardware just did a really good review on CPU coolers so you can see what cools the best and for the best price. Although the stock cooler does ok, it is not really meant for OC'ing at all.

I know that one works well as I have it on a Q6600 OC'd to 2.9ish and only added about 7 degree's to the proc.
Vista improves in tons of ways over XP. The pre-loaded apps are way better, they added some much needed utilities (the ability to adjust partitions is extremely handy), security is substantially better in Vista than XP, a search feature that is not only quick but useful, etc.
I have XP and Vista on my gaming machine and the difference is negligible. XP is slightly faster in benchmarks, but I could really give a fvck less about 150 points (oh noes, not 1%) in 3DMark06 or a few seconds on startup/shutdown, personally.

IMO, putting XP on a new computer is retarded unless you absolutely, positively NEED XP in order to run something you absolutely need that won't work w/ Vista ... especially XP x64.

If you're going to skimp in one place, do it on the hard drive or graphics card as those items are easily upgradable and advance very quickly in terms of power (GPUs) or capacity (HDDs). Skimping on the power supply will get you an unstable piece of shit computer that crashes all the time and with an increased failure rate on components. Under no circumstances should you ever compromise on the quality of the power supply (i.e. getting a Raidmax piece of shit). The OCZ PSU is okay, but I wouldn't buy it personally. I would probably pick up the Corsair CMPSU-620HX, which is a fvcking awesome power supply, very quiet, and modular.
Before you buy anything, consider waiting for the 45 nm Intel Quads to come out (they're due out very shortly). Not only will they be faster, but you'll also have more selection in your price range. Plus, considering you're playing mostly RTS games, the CPU is going to be the most important part, alongside the RAM. Spending $200+ on a graphics card to play RTS games when you're on a $1000 budget isn't a good decision, IMO, unless you're playing at substantial resolutions (i.e. 1680x1050 or higher) ...

I couldn't agree more on the PSU speech. PSU is very important. I think the Antec he choose is a very good unit. As I stated above, there are better, but he picked a good one.

I was giving my opinion based on real world usage on XP vs. Vista. My current pc running both Vista and XP Dual core X2 4800 2gb ram raptor drive 7900gt. I lost 25fps on bf2 and crysis was near unplayable. Also, I had to underclock my video card just get it to work on Vista.

Even on the quad core system, Vista had too many errors. It has the possibility of being a good OS, but I just see it being another ME *shrug*.

Both of my computers were limited by the video card though, you are going with one of the better cards out there. Vista may run as Jmac stated.
