i looked into piecing a computer together but you can buy an hp for almost the same price with the same specs

This way I can have exactly what I want though

I would look at a mobo with the newer intel chipsets. I find installation and stability is better than ATI\Nvidias chipsets. Patriot memory is good... Enermax PSUs, Seagate hard drives

if you can, get an X-Fi sound card...

look at patriot ram. Smaller company, pretty good prices, lifetime warranty, fast, lots of kits. Give it a look.
and yeah... LOL Intel's fab's are much more advanced than AMD's... All those Tri-core CPUs are just the flawed quadcores with 1 core disabled because they cant make a working product. But yeah... those flawed quad cores are of much better quality than Intel's fully functioning quad core...

The Tri-Core is a result of AMD actually being able to build a real quad-core and not just piece 2 dual cores together. If 1 core doesn't meet certain criteria, they can still sell it as a higher model than a dual core without losing a substantial amount of money.

Jmac, you're an *******, just thought I'd let you know...

but the mobo looks good, i'll browse around a bit tom in class and try to find a cheaper and or better one for the same price.

forgot about the patriot ram, its really good stuff. For sound cards, don't feel ike you have to get the xi-fi budget busters. There are other companies like bluegears etc. but the xifi is still good. its like kicker, everyone knows about it and wants it but there are alternatives that are just as good.

You have some really good choices already. I LOVE the q6600. If I could suggest the ABIT IN9 32X-MAX LGA 775 Nvidia nForce 680i SLI / NF590 SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127020

I linked that from newegg but they no longer carry it. That is basically a server board that was switched to home use (much like the AMD 1207 FX chips, if you know what that is). I put that in my ladies pc and it is rock solid, can run up to 32gb of ram (why anyone would need that) and has true load balancing of the NIC (which is a first for me).

Ram, go with 4gb. At 100 dollars right now, it doesn't get much better. Just remember that you will need a 64-bit OS if your going to want to utilize all 4gb. A 9XXX series Nvidia is good, but I still love the 8800GT.

I didn't see budget or purpose but get a good case/power supply. I like the P series from Antec, dead quiet and pretty nice looking. Power supplies are as important as a hard drive, cpu or motherboard. Get something high end or everything suffors. A 550watt name brand is going to be better than a 700 watt no name.

Built in sound usually works for me, although I do have a few X-fi's around. I know i'm forgetting things but if you really need some help with a build send me a budget and what you need the pc for and I'll find some links for you (Monday's are SLLLLLOOOW at work lol). I don't build for people I don't know but I can get you all the links, I think it is fun LOL.

With the current prices on memory being at all time lows, no reason NOT to go with 4gb.

Now the proc, there are other choices, but at 250 dollars and many software titles coming out that are going to be multi-threaded, it just seems logical to get ready for the future.

Vista (although I hate it) takes better advantage of multiple cores as well. Also, is a memory hog.

No, I would say Windows XP as it takes less resources. You can run it on a system that you are putting together but your frame rates and overall load times will take a bit of a hit.

Until they get some of the fat off of Vista, I would still stick with XP (64-bit if your over 3gb).

Vista's only real improvement is that it runs DX10 games (and is currently the only OS to do so). So you will not get the full effects of the DX10 card without it.

I keep forgetting to put this in....get an aftermarket cooler. Tomshardware just did a really good review on CPU coolers so you can see what cools the best and for the best price. Although the stock cooler does ok, it is not really meant for OC'ing at all.

I know that one works well as I have it on a Q6600 OC'd to 2.9ish and only added about 7 degree's to the proc.

I like sony, but really I never pass up on a deal. Most of the DRU's are good from sony though.

As you can see they are CHEAP.
