anyone ever build a "stepped" box?

if I don't find a pair of 12"s I think I might get an HDC318A. Only problem is that I can only fit about 16.5" under my rear deck. however I can go up to almost 18" after that rear deck. so my box would have a "step" to it more or less, like the "drawing" shows. Anything "harmful" in doing this?

i have, i ended up not liking it at all, so then i just made my subs upfire

what didn't you like about it?

I can't "up fire" because my port is going to come up through the rear deck... plus the sub would hit the rear deck unless I made the box really short but that wouldn't work because I can't go much wider/longer...

well I was going to suggest that you need to account for the 3/4" wood clearance on top and bottom of the sub. So really you would need 19.5 " ? I dunno, looks like you sorta accounted for that..... awesome drawing tho

LOL... drawing is sweet right!

the cutout is 16.75" so I would need the box to be a little bit taller (probably do 18.5") but other than that...

FTR: I am thinking about an 18" BTL now since TirpleB45 is selling all of his...

thanks man... fastest box I've ever built. Still needs a good sanding and a finish but the guy who I built it for is happy. It was kind of a puzzle putting it together so I could screw and glue everything I needed to. I wouldnt do the "stepped" thing for ported boxes as it would probably cause loading issues, this one was about 3.6 cubes sealed.

this would have been ported... I decided to go with a pair of 12"s like I originally wanted to so. This might interest some other people though so...

Its probably not a big deal in a low powered setup where cosmetics are key but if you're chasing tenths on the meter then thats another story

yeah i had a box like that in my mustang with 1 DD 9515 and my buddy has 1 with 2 aq hdc3 15s i dont know if it was the box or my amp clipping but i unloaded my subs sometimes....im selling mine depending on what u plan on running in it
