I am have not done anything with car audio since the mid ‘80s, so please forgive my ignorance. I wanted a critique of the audio system I am planning for my ’79 Z28 that I am restoring. Here is the list of what I have.
1 pair JBL GT102 subwoofers
100 watt Alphasonik amp
50 watt Alphasonik amp
1 pair JBL GT616 6-1/2 component speaker system
Here are the criteria:
I don’t want to cut any sheet metal
I want the system to be somewhat sympathetic to the time period of the car, so no trunk full of amps with neon lights and subwoofer enclosures.
No enclosures don’t want the extra weight plus I wouldn’t be able to put the T-tops in the
Trunk
Here is the plan:
6-1/2 component system in the doors, powered by the 50 watt amp, with the tweeter either on the upper part of the door panel or on top of the dash.
Here is the part that may seem a little weird. I am going to mount the subwoofer (infinite Baffle) under the rear deck with some adapters and fire them through the 6x9 holes In the rear deck, and hook them up with a pair of P25T JBL tweeters, so I will have full range sound from the rear deck, and I hoping for superior sound compared to multi-driver speakers.
The questions that I know enough to ask are:
The rear the woofer can handle 130 watts rms the tweeters can only handle 60, so how much power do I run, or is there something else I should do.
Capacitors where just coming out about the time I got out of car audio years ago, so I am not that familiar with them does this system need them and if so what, where and why.
Obviously this is a cheap budget system compared to what you guy’s on here would build, but any thoughts or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
