I have no experience with the Alpine unit in question but I have recently seen multiple complaints about the lack of processing on the 9856 and for that I would have to say that the eXcelon is going to have the edge in the SQ department.

I do see many people posting good things about the iPod interface with the newer Alpines being pretty outstanding so if that is of any great import to the intended end user then that might give the Alpine a more serious nod.

Being a die-hard Kenwood loyalist personally, though, is going to automatically lead me to suggest the Kenwood over what I view is an inferior unit and not particularly comparable to that specific Kenwood.

Thank you for a really good answer, as far as SQ goes I know mines better, but I am having problems with mine. My friends 9856 is only 5 days old, so if he had a problem already he should take it back. I think Im going to call Kenwood tomorrow and see what they say about the problem I am having since my warranty is still good.

What's wrong with it or what's it doing or failing to do?

Do it with any CD or just the ones you're burning?

If the latter my best suggestion is to change the brand of blank media you're using.

No it doesnt do it with any CD, Some days are better than others. And some cds are better than others. But IMHO I think its very gay it will only work on some cds

Then yes, that's definitely a problem that needs looking at.

Every great while my now-retired KDC-X679 would have trouble with one certain brand of blanks....I quit using those particular blanks and reburnt the discs I wanted to use in the car and the problem went away. That's why I asked.
