I had a similar experience OP back years ago on New Years Eve in Michigan. Anyone who lives in Michigan knows that the Michigan State Police are pretty ruthless mofos. Well, I was heading to my friends house to play some cards (I was alone in the car). I had not drank anything yet. It was about 1 AM. I was driving 100% clean and legal. I see him pull out behind me after I passed an intersection. He hits the lights. I pull over at the next cross street since there were no shoulders and I didn't want to block the small 2 lane road.
He comes to the window (no tint on my car either) and asks for ID and stuff which I had ready. Also, just as a sign of no ill will, I always turn on my dome lights, turn the engine off, and have my hands on the wheel when they approach. I hope that it makes their job easier and gets me on my way sooner.
Well he takes my stuff to his car and sits there for about 20 mins. I am starting to get worried about wtf is taking so long. Then I realize he was waiting for backup. Next thing I know there are 3 more MSP cars on scene. The original officer comes to my car and asks me to get out. When I get out I see the other officers with guns drawn. I was scared shitless to say the least.
He asked me if I had been drinking and I said no. He said he could smell alcohol on me (which was BS) and he needed me to walk the line. Now remember I am flanked by other cops with their guns out, pointed at me. I am noticeably nervous and for good cause. They interpret it as me being worried about getting busted. I was worried about getting shot. After passing a few tests, I asked if it would be OK to just do a breathalyser test and get it over with.
Big mistake. They saw it as me trying to be a smart *** punk. Honestly I tried to say it as humbly as I could. I guess as a 20 something year old kid, it would have sounded bad no matter what. They were more pissed than ever now.
So he goes to the squad car and gets the breathalyser thing and asks me to blow through it. I do and it comes up all 0s. He seems even more pissed now. He demands that I try harder this time and make sure I don't try to cheat. I blow as hard as I can for as long as I can the second time. Again it comes back 0s. Now he is sure that I am cheating somehow. He asks me to open my mouth and move my tongue around so he can check to see if I have anything in my mouth, which I don't.
Now they are all pissed off that they can't pin anything on me. I see that they have nothing, so I ask why he originally pulled me over. He said I crossed the center line while going through the intersection. I then mentioned that he was almost 100 feet from the intersection when I was going through it, how could he have saw that I crossed the center line? He told me to get in my car and drive home. If he saw me in Michigan ever again he would find a reason to pull me over next time.
Not one to push my luck, I simply drove to my friends house and stayed there that night so I didn't give him the chance to make good on his word.
That is one reason why I hate cops.
