another cherokee question from adio......

hey kids, shortdude here. besides the body, is there any major differences between a regular cherokee and a grand cherokee? i'm still lookin to buy one of them.
I think there are some obvious differences, like options available/standard. As far as the drivetrain, I dont know enough about those trucks to comment. Maybe if you give us a better idea what differences you are interested in or concerned may exist, we might be able to give better answers.

Very good points from an off-roading perspective.
Yeah for under a grand you can make a cherokee a very capable off roader , where thousands spent on a grand cherokee still wouldn't yield the capability of the standard cherokee. But a grand cherokee is definitely a nicer street driving vehicle , very comfortable. And gobs of power , my dad had one with all wheel drive and a 5.9L v8 , he could eat mustangs off the line till around 100 MPH then the mustang would catch up , but who wants to go over 100 in an SUV anyway? LOL

I've got the 4.7 in mine with awd. Its definitely nice as hell, heated leather seats, sunroof, and every other option that came on the 01.

If ya wanna offroad, Get a cherokee, like mentioned its so much easier to make it a very good off roader. If you're looking for luxury, go with a grand cherokee.

well, i'm not lookin for anything specific. i know vey little about autos......

yes , cherokee has straight axles where a grand cherokee has ifs/irs , and they are on completely different frames. totally different vehicles.
is that what makes a cherokee such a stiff ride?

what are ifs/irs?? independent rear/front suspension?

great post!! when i had my black cherokee last year, i drove on the beach with no problem. then i had a 3 inch lift and 30-somethin-inch tires. the truck was like that when i bought it. the cherokee i have now is mega-stock!! nothing extra on it. i tried driving on the beach about 4 months ago and almost got stuck even with the 4x4 on.

really glad you said this. i thought all it took to make a truck off road capable was a lift, some bigger tires and do something with the air intake!! i won't be doing any offroading. the only "extreme" things i'll be doing is driving in city snow and maybe driving through sand dunes every once in a while. and they'll be flat sand dunes not hills....... if that makes any sense :p. i was watchin vids on youtube to see what the grand cherokees are capable of; since like a few of the v6 GC got stuck a few times when it looked like they shouldn't have. the v8 GC were gettin busy tho.

hows it going with your tires on it? do you have to replace all 4 alot since it's a full time AWD?

Good point. My front tires are wearing a little bit on the outsides, but that can be a simple alignment problem. Mines got the quadra-drive in it. So, technically not all 4 axles are going at once but as soon as the rear starts slipping it kicks in. I've had it for a year now and I'm just about to replace all the tires, but they were really ready anyways. If you go for one of the wjs I go with the v8. the power is nice to have there, and the mpg is just about the same.

We never put intake kits on our off road vehicles down here unless its a snorkel , mud and water get in the motor too easily.
