Installer, since 1984
my dad had marantz tube amps and vinyl. i was brought up in adio, and wen i was 9, i installed my first "boostilzer."
started installing at the age of 13, took a full time position at a shop thats been in business for 37 years. got mecp certified in 1997. became a usac director in 1998.
started the virtual technologies controversy on termpro, which led to the revolution of the modern spl vehicle (look in my sig).
was the first person wayne harris ever seen pop150 the termpro legal with two punch power 10s, a vt box, 150 watts, in an escort daily driver with NO MODS, stock everything down to the carpet.
won the iasca southern invitational @ perry, ga with the same setup in 1998, with a 150.5. first time i had ever got real money for winning, haha.
learned enclosure design from my dad, who is now 76 years old.
my first show was in mccomb, ms, at a local shop called wizards in 1986. had 2 punch 15s on a punch 45, and another punch 45 on the highs, with a kenwood cassette deck. back then, there was no iasca or usac, just thunder on wheels. got 3rd, and been hooked ever since.
took a hiatus from competition after 98 till now, my wife and i starting a family.
anyway, not bragging (well maybe a tad), just making sure i qualify myself for what i am about to say about the type-r in my opinion.
the last competition system i owned, i was sponsored by linear power, cerwin-vega, and kenwood. it consisted of 2 stroker 15s in 11 cubes tuned to 45 hz, with a linear 4.1hvs(2700 watts rms, benched), on each stroker, with a linear pa2 preamp sending 30 VOLTS out to the amps, and 6 yellow tops (didnt know better at the time), and a power eagle 260 amp alt. it would play beach boys at 153 all day long, and meter just a hair below 160 on the ac-180.
the system i was putting together currently was an adire brahma extreme and a bd1501 modded. after smoking it, i decided to get 3 type-r 12s to try while i reconed my brahma. picked them up on ebay for 115 each, shipped.
got it all installed today, and i am truly impressed, as is my father (thats saying something, i promise). the box is tuned for sql, at 32 hz, and these things sound awesome. sq is better than the adire, right up there around my dads klipsh horns.
and, these things are... loud...
on my splmeter.com meter, which is around 2 dbs LOWER than the current tp mic (tested it at a triple point, i know), it is pulling 145.7 on the dash, at 32 hz.
keep in mind, this lil ranger is in a blowthru, with only an upgraded alt and battery, and i can make the amp clip, and the subs dont sweat it one bit. i actually am thinking about getting one more bd for them, so i can put them to their true potential.
build quality is great, typical alpine.
i know i will probably get beat up for posting about the type-r, but there are many still asking about them, and just wanted to let everyone hear another positive story about them.
thanks for your time!
