amps overheating

hello everybody. My name is Jared and i've got a problem...

I recently replaced my 4 channel amp in my car and had to make a new board to accomodate the amp. I ended up being a little short on one power wire and one ground, so i took a little extra wire that was laying around and taped it to the end of the originals. I know, you think i'm retarded.

So, everything worked great except that the amps both overheated. I checked the wiring to make sure that it was correct, it was. I talked to someone, he said the ground was too small, i told him about my tape job and he said that's it. Went to audio place and got 2 barrel connectors, put those on. Overheating problem continues on both amps. One amp shuts off if i crank it for a while.

Does anyone have any good ideas as to why my amps are so hot? They used to be fine, until i rewired. Is it the barrel connectors?

I would appreciate any hints.

You could put the amps in a place where your a/c can hit them, or whut i do because i always have my windows down was i put my amp in a spot where the air always hit the amp, and it has only overheated once since... but when i had my amp underneath my seat, i had a 12volt fan i bought at radio shack for like 4 bucks and it did the job fine, but it still was over heating because i always keep my bass all the way up... so i would prob do whut neonrider said and turn down your gain a bit, and then either hook up a fan or two, or just re-place your amp in a spot where air can hit it....

So this is the new amp overheating on you? Some lower quality amps are known to have heat issues. What amp is it? You could try building a sealed amp rack with exhaust fans to get the air moving over the heatsinks if nothing else works.

i should probably re-iterate: this problem never used to occur until i reinstalled the amps. Before, neither amp did it, now both do. I'll try the gain thing, but i'm convinced that there's something else...
