amp going in protect mode

So i have a crunch pzi1000.1 powering an orion dual 2 ohm 500 watt (1000 peak) 10 inch sub at 1 ohm(1000 wts). Every once in a while the amp goes into protect mode and shuts off. Whats going on?

Turn your gains all of the way down and set the sub on ur hu at 0

Voltage drop. I'm sure amp is probably getting hot overtime too.

ok so i know the rms input of my sub is 500 watts, but what is the rms output of my amp? its a crunch pzi 1000.1

1. find a test tone here in between 50 and 60hz.

2. Set all eq setting on your hu at 0.

3. Unhook your subwoofer and put a DMM on the channel you were using and set it to AC

4. Play the sin wave at 3/4 of your total volume.

5. Since your sub is rated for 500 watts RMS you are goin to start with your gain on your amp at zero and turn it up until your DMM reads close to 22.

EDIT: DONT EVER GO ABOVE THIS SETTING. lol this will keep your amp and sub safe.

My only question with this method is what is the liklihood that he is actually going to reach that voltage when playing his tunes? I mean, you are using a test tone here which is a constant and in my experience, setting the amp gain this way actually turns out to be pretty low.

If his max voltage is supposed to be 22, I'd maybe start by setting the gain using the method described and then proceed to play one of your fav tunes that will really push the amp. Leave the DMM on the speaker outs and note the voltage...it's going to bounce all over the place as your tunes are not a test tone, but if the voltages displayed never get close to 22, you should be able to push the gain up some more until you start seeing number closer to 22. IMHO.

Some call this setting the gains by ear. Adding the DMM just makes sure you are staying within the parameters of the amp.

Oh yeah, and disconnect the speakers before doing the above! All you need to do is measure the speaker outs at the amp with the DMM. If you leave the speakers connected you will risk damaging them.

yeah but the thing is my amp doesnt just have gain, it has a sub sonic knob, bass boost knob, and a low pass filter knob..which do i adjust to mess with the voltage and what do i do with the other ones?
