I went to a car audio pplace looking to get a system installed. I am getting 2 12 alpine type R 600w. I think the model number is swr-1223d in a probox and a kenwood kac-9015d amp. The max power on th amp is 1800w. They ar going to do that systm plus wires and istallation for $750. Is this a fair price. The store is kind of shary with prices cause at first he told me 1000. Any idea wat this is worh so I can make them an offer or somthing.

Half your cost here is install.

A good shop will know how long it will take to do that job correctly and they will quote the labor accordingly. Without seeing an itemized quote to know where the money is going it's not a fair judgement, but I'm suspicious as to why they dropped $250 off the quote.

Don't buy the set. Offer him about 350 for the pair of type Rs and take your money here to get you a better amp and a non-prefab box that will actually make those Type Rs shine. You'll be far under 1000 and you won't have to worry about shady business to make it happen. Also, @Dtrom ; has two Type R 12s he's trying to sell right now at 90 bucks plus shipping and are basically new. Try and get your shop to price-match that and watch their heads spin.

As for the install, doing a sub and amp should be a quick afternoon project if you take the time to learn the basics here. Save yourself the money since they're probably bought all that stuff for 500 from their distributors.

I'd buy from a retailer on here... at least if your local shop isn't hurting for business. IF you go to them, buy the subs and do the install yourself. They're making enough off the equipment and half the fun is learning to build yourself.

Vertex Audio, Easy Way Electronics and Jim's shop should all be able to help you out with equipment and double 07 and pro-rabbit are the resident box-builders. Between all of them, you'll be very well taken care of and the customer service should be a significant improvement. Here's some shoutouts:

For Equipment @VertexAudio ;
@trumpet ;
@mylows10 ;

For Boxes
@double 07 ;
@pro\-rabbit ;

Finally, if you're willing, we can direct you out to some used equipment that you can get here at a steal. People local to you can recommend Craigslist deals as well.

Car Audio Help 101

Everything should be covered in there. You can also look through people's build logs for pictures and ideas.

When it comes to car audio, install it yourself.

These installers charge way too much. And don't give me BS about their "labor" and all that crap. I work in a factory, doing REAL labor, and I don't get paid $500 per hour like these installers want for an hours worth of work.

Wiring the radio is pretty much matching colors, and if you run into a problem you can ask here and someone will help you. The battery is straight forward, positive to positive and negative to negative.
