I have been looking into alternators lately because it is the next step in my upgrade path for my car. I was wondering if anyone had a particular brand they use and have had success with in the past. I have a 2001 Honda Accord EX V6, and am looking to upgrade to an alternator with a peak amperage of around 200 amps. Please limit recommending a brand only if you or someone close to you has actually owned the product for a time. Any help, positive or negative feedback of a brand would help immensely.

Read around, there's a few threads that contradict a few companies. Some won't do rated power, some have shitty customer service, etc.

I'll tell you one thing though, the alt for your Accord is going to cost you a d@mn pretty penny. I had one quoted for my Civic, and it was over $550 shipped.

motor city reman is crap. didn't seem like it put out anything.

mlstrass is using a ea alt and been fine for over 2 years in his altima.

sleepyjr is using a mean green alt for his envoy and had to send it in twice because the bearings went bad.

You will likely be dissapointed with the idle output of any 200 amp alternator built out of stock case. In order to get 200 amps out of that case style, your idle output will suffer severely. Regretably, we have not yet developed a large case conversion for your application.

We do have a 150 amp stock-case upgrade (over 90 amps at idle) for $175 shipped though. 100% new parts, comes with a hassle-free service plan and an overdrive pulley. That is a 50% off clearance price.

I bought mine from summit racing....it's a power master...it is very nice. Not cheap though.

Have heard good things about Mech-Man.

Best alternators I have personally used are the Powermaster units on my previous SPL truck, absolutely awesome units.

Friend of mine has two Excessive Amperage alts that have been working well for him for a few months now.

Had an HO Alts unit fail within 4 days of installation on a Civic.

i used a 300amp EA

at idle i dont think it was to much better than a stock alt even tho i upgraded to a large case.

around 900-1200rpm it did a good job though.

for what i paid though it was very good

going to be going with MECHMAN this time though

matt has great prices and the fact he dyno's to show you are getting what you are paying for helps

I personally have seen Alt's from Motor City Reman that are very good, I have also seen them fail soon after install...

I personally have seen Alt's from Iraggi do really good, I have also seen them be bad out of the box....

I know its a p.i.t.a to have to put them on and take them back off for service, but both companies had excellent customer support on taking care of the faulty units.

You also have to keep in mind that there are some guidelines you must go by when putting a new unit on:

upgrade your wiring, make sure the battery is FULLY CHARGED before you fire everything up. etc.etc.

I've got a 220amp Stinger Alt that I've had since February of '07 and it's been great. A little on the pricey side though.

I appreciate the help a great deal. I have requested several quotes from places, and it looks to be about $500 for most places. I did have one question though: some of you have referred to some people as having the seller "dyno" what they are buying. Is that like actually using the product first, measuring what it puts it out at certain RPMs and such? If anyone has more suggestions I encourage your responses, you have all been very helpful. -Justin
