Alternator Cooling

I searched the forums to see if anyone had this issue but did not find any posts.

So I upgraded to a HO Alt which works great if cooled due to the aftermarket headers i got with the car being less than 1inch away from the alts rectifier. I am currently looking into getting the stock headers with heat shield hopefully this will solve my heat issue. I noticed it only happens in the day when I am bumping and my a/c is off i get a 2v drop!! In the night of course it its cooler outside so i can bump all night long no issue.

Anyone has a solution?

Ok was looking into getting a small 12v fan and I did wrap 2 of the headers closest to the alt but with no success. I do think shielding may work due to the headers being so close to the alt may pass heat on even quicker.

Well yes if you make the shielding out of metal....proper thermal shielding has a barrier that isn't thermally conductive.

You could come up with a sweet water cooled setup, lol.

you might want to just remove the headers unless you want to sheild all of it, doing the closest ones probably wont work because the engine bay is like a big sauna and holds the heat in.

Im thinking of going with the stock headers having them wrapped or coated and placing the heat shield over them that should help I hope. The location of the alt really sucks in this car and i doubt relocation is an option that way the engine is setup.

Even if you put the stock headers back on, you may want to make a duct from the front of the car to direct cool (for Cayman LOL) air to the alt. so it isn't using the hot air inside the engine compartment. You can pull from down low by the bumper or possibly from the side of the rad. at the grill.

Well guys my theory was actually wrong, heat was not the issue, it was Honda's Electronic Load Detection (ELD) screwing up my voltage. Basically if the a/c or headlights are not on it tells the alt to put out minimum volatage. It comes in most usdm Honda's and some jmd ones as well. Working on getting a switch installed to bypass this feature.

But Kent you are right need get some better airflow to it for Cayman heat lol
