alternator big 3 wire

on my 02 accord i have my alternator cable running back to the firewall and into the fuse box and then to the battery. my question is do i have to run the new bigger cable thru the same route to keep it fused or can i run it straight to the battery and keep the factory one on there fused. or fuse the new one that ill put straight to the battery. if so what size fuse....whats the right way to do this

Leave that wire and just put a 0awg from the alt positive post to the batt positive. And fuse it with what ever wattage your alternator is.

eg,/ 200amp alt - 200 amp fuse

135 amp alt - closest thing UNDER 135 amp fuse

Isn't the fuse there to make sure the wire doesn't burn up, and for that reason shouldn't the fuse size be chosen based on the type of wire it is attached to?

i have an accord so its like a 90 amp alt right....so i get a fuse close to that or just under

Yes and No, depends on the case. You fuse Below the wires rating, Above the component/alternators rating. Sticking closer to the Component/Alternator side of the equation.

IE If you have a 90a alternator, and 1/0ga cable, dont fuse it with a 80a fuse. Sure most alternators wont hit their rated amperage, but if they do the fuse blows. YOU DONT want this. The wire isnt going to burn up anywhere near that rating. Fuse it at 100-150a.

The fuse is there to protect the wire and everything else in case something goes majorly wrong and the component/alternator starts doing something it's not supposed to do, IE a 90a alternator pushing out 300a suddenly
