alpine type x subs in a ported box

you couldn't go deaf off that with a dd box.
Aparently hearing damage starts occurring at much lower volume levels than you realize. You can do hearing damage with a cheap boom-box. Go 'deaf'? Probably not, not a likely situation even for a much larger system. But having the ability to damage hearing permanently? You better believe it.

The levels that will really cause damage are the upper frequencies, not so much the sub bass.

Think about it, hearing damage is usually accompanied with pain and ringing that lasts for more than 15 minutes after the event. How many times has bass caused your ears to ring? I've been caught off guard at shoot ranges before when people have fired a weapon close by while I had hearing protection out. That shit hurts and the ringing lasts a while. Rifles usually meter around 140dBs or so and I've listened to systems with bass that far exceeds 140dB yet I'm never in pain and I have never had ringing due to bass.

I have, however, had my ears ring from driving over about a 2 hour period listening to rock at full tilt and after a while, it does get a little painful.

Hearing damage effects, and intensity, are definitely affected by frequency. No denying that, nor was I. But even a modest substage setup can cause permanent damage.
Actually Ive read studies that say our hearing is best when we are small children, but the every day exposures to noises in our common modern environment decay our hearing progressively throughout our lives. We basically start losing our hearing very early in life.

Also, Ive known people in the 'SPL scene' for many years who have said they recognize severe 'holes' in their hearing. Like whole ranges of freqs they can barely hear anymore.

Yea, it's just like our eyesight and libido; they all decrease as we age. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I have one type-x 12 in 2.4 @ 31-32hz. Sounds amazing. I dont know if that helps, but the sub get DEEP. I would think they like big boxes.
i'm thinking of goin with my x. i want the most output from it. i've heard sealed is the best, but i've heard of a few ported. for a single Type X 12" what would be the best recommendation? it didn't like my MTX box (dunno cubes) at 38hz
