The w3 would a little louder but not by much as for the Type-R it has really good SQ but much more than the w3. To me both subs are about the same but one just has the edge by a little over the other. Both very good subs.

if you are stuck with those 2 as your choices, I would lean towards the Alpine, but if you are open to other subs, check out Eclipse Aluminums

shiva or e12k, type r and w3 dont really compare to those two. from what ive heard, both the shiva and e12k will have better sq and better spl

i heard 2 12 elcipse aluminum, 2 12 alpine type r, and 2 10 jl w3. The 2 10 from jl kicked the shit out of those two other subs running at 500 watts.

must have been a bad install, the capabilities of the Eclipse are far above the the Alpine and the JL's
