Alpine 9855 - Going Active

Hey Guys

I'm thinking about going active with these recommended mids and tweets, do i have enough power for good results? Or should I just get a component set and run passive?

Amp JL 500/5:

100x2 to mids

25x2 to tweets

250 to Sub

Those would work.

Personally, I like tweeters that extend lower...

There's a MULTITUDE of choices on madisound though.

I'd like to see some suggestions for the actual crossover points/slopes. I'll be going active when I finish my install on my 9855 too (Kicker SS comps powered by a zx650.4). I'm still learning the ins and outs of this head unit, so some good starting points would be awesome.

you could start off with the tweets at 3.2 khz and the mids bp at 80-3.2khz

Hybrid Audio has a 3" midrange that can play from 130hz-10000 hz. With a really good crossover that is. Most of the guys run it from 140hz-6000hz and let the tweeter take over from there. It is called a point source midrange. I will be running mine that way. That basically covers all the frequencies that you hear the most and will have it coming from one location.

Apline Warns of flat being enabled in 3 Way mode. Make sure your components are setup to block low Freq to the tweeters.

You can use the built-in Parametic EQ and Graphic. Make sure you pack a lunch and beer cause time will fly by tuning it.

That's a great idea for a 3-way frontstage. Completely agreed there.

However, you can't inherently take those same concepts and transpose them down to a large-midwoofer based 2-way system. For one beaming issues will begin taking affect sooner; that driver is -5db down at 3khz at 30* off-axis and nearly -10db down @ 3khz @ 60* off-axis....and being in a vehicle you can bet they'll be aimed off-axis....in doors being 60* off-axis isn't an unreasonable assumption. Obviously this doesn't take vehicle acoustics into account.....but based simply on physics beaming for a 7" driver is going be an issue in the 3khz and above region.

Likewise, running higher is going to push you closer or into the drivers breakup nodes (given most larger diameter mids will begin to break up at a much lower frequency than a 3" mid), increasing distortion and frequency response anomolies.

Given the tweeters FS of 1170hz, and the "rule of thumb" to keep the xover for the tweeter 1 octave above.....I would start highpassing the tweeter/lowpassing the mid around 2.3-2.5khz @ 18db-24db/oct and go from there.

If you have access to an RTA, it would do wonders for you aswell.
