my first time upgrading to a new system. I have a pioneer premier deh-p480mp H/U. I have $700 to upgrade my speakers and get an amp or amps. Problem I have is that I will need some shallow subs...only working with about 5.5" of mounting depth and around .60 cubic ft of air space. Its going in a ford extended cab so Its a small area...

also, since all you have is a headunit, we need some suggestions on music preference, what kinda sound you're looking for, etc so we can recommend speakers/subs and then recommend amps for them.

AE Slimeline 10" is 3.25" deep SVC 8ohm 400 watts rms

Kaption Audio Flat 10" 2.5" deep SVC 4ohm 250 watts rms

either will work in those boxes. I think a SS might be 2 deep maybe?

I listen to alot of new and classic rock, but every now and then i listen to hip hop. I want a setup geared for SQ but have the bass when i want it. not sure if i should start with my subs or my components first?

components would be your best bet cuz that's where you'll get all your highs and midranges. you'll see ALOT of improvement just by changing out your factory speakers. the bass just fills in the low-end if you will.

Thanks dkguitarist...maybe i should concentrate on the components first...now i need to figure out how to put my money to good use..i wanna do this myself. no experince doing this but wanna get the best i can get with the money i have...so now i need components 6.5" and an amp.
