advantages of a 2nd battery

i've been planning on hooking up a second battery and wondering if it's really even worth doing. i'm gonna run an orion 2500D and viper 550.6. i read the thread inhuman made about there tests and they had good results without a second battery. i don't listen to the system with the engine off. i also have a 250 amp alt i'm gonna install. should i sell the battery and get a good one under the hood, or hook it up? it's an optima yellowtop D31 commercail battery. also this is a daily driver, not a comp setup.
