add a sub or leave it out?

IMO u need a sub. Bass is a must.
Ever hear a subless setup that can go into subbass? I don't think you'd be saying that then //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

not enough for high end stuff tho.
He probably could find a used pair of Hybrid L6-L1's for that budget, or buy a set of Claruses new...

Go active as well. Get a 4-channel amp, but bi-amp.

Don't bother with passives if you're seriously getting into this...

you might also look into using 5 channel amps instead of two seperate amps. ease of wiring FTW! seeing how you are looking for more SQ, you don't need a huge amount of power for your substage.

x2...

I vote on a good 5 channel amp, great components, active capable HU, deadening for the doors and whatever else you can put it on, and no rear fill. As far as a sub i would get an 8" or 10" sealed up..

Honestly Image Dynamics makes great speakers to use...

The only problem I see with that is the budget. I don't have a ton of money to spend especially b/c the harness I need for the cd player I need is $200 (06 Pontiac G6).

my factory deck tells temp, oil level, etc. 04-06 Chevy/Pontiac models have them and from what have I've read its the only way to have a aftermarket deck with these types or cars.

x2.
I don't believe in spending more on your sub stage than on your component stage since the sub stage only covers from about 120hz (the slope begins at 120hz, but most of the time full power comes in at 100hz) to 20hz... which is a small scale in the audible range of 20 hz to 20K hz.

So, you're basically spending all this money for a small portion of the audible scale. I say great components, and a decent sub.

(I've spent 400 on my comp stage, and roughly 250 on my sub stage. Prices include amp.)
lmao i spent over $1300 on all my bass, amp, etc. luckily i had good stock components tho.

I was thinking about keeping the factory for now. Since I have some extra money then I guess I might look at maybe adding some rear fills and maybe a 5 channel amp instead. Any suggestions? I want to do all this myself too but I never have before so I gotta make sure this doesn't get too complicated too.

The reason I'm thinking about the rear fills is b/c woofersetc has cdt stuff pretty cheap. Diduhearthat, I saw u recomended the boston comps but run cdt's, how do you like your cdt's?

I like my CDT's (good for the money I spent), but I have been put off recommending cdt to others because they have come out with about 50 different speaker lines making it impossible to get any reasonbalbe feedback on a particular model. Even the model I have is now made with different componets and crossover so I couldn't tell you if it's a good buy now.

I know almost anything by boston acoutsics, morel or focal are going to sound as good or better than anything else in thier price range.

It depends on the quality of the units, and personal preference. For me, the dynamics of the sound are the most important thing and this usually means a sub will help me out there.. but not always. Depends on many factors.
