I just picked up a 4 channel amp that I was originally going to bridge and run my boston s60 comps passive, but I decided that since I have an 880 I'd just give active a shot. The amp is a Denon 4 channel, 50x4, I'm sure it's at least a few years old, but it was never used. I'm having a really difficult time setting my gains and tuning everything. I expected things to sound weird for a while, until I learned a bit more, but I'm getting periodic crackling in my speakers, especially my tweets. I have the gains on the absolute lowest settings and I still get about the same volume levels as I did running my comps off of hu power. I really need help setting the gains, the tuning I'll get the hang of eventually. I have a theory that could be way off, but it may be something to consider. I'm thinking that maybe my hu's preouts are too powerfull and that this amp wasn't originally designed for such a high voltage. Anyway, I'm hoping someone here can help me get these gains set properly so that I don't ruin anything. I know my speakers aren't ideal (especially in terms of a good active set up) but I'm sure that If I do things right I can make them sound better than they did passive. Someone please chime in!
