Active vs. passive crossover - best option

Hi,

I'm new to this forum but would like some advice from you seasoned pro's. I'm getting a new HU for my car, a pioneer DEH-p7800mp. It comes with active/digital crossover for both the sub and the speakers I believe. I am also running a Rockford Fosgate Punch 200s 2 ch. amp for my front RF component speakers, and a JBL 600.1 mono amp for my 12'' Kicker L7 sub. Both of the amps have crossover adjustments. The questions are:

1. Should I use the crossover from the amps or the crossover from the HU or both?

2. Are the crossovers on the amps considered passive?

3. Will the fact that I have another set of crossovers with my component front speakers affect the setup?

4. What would be the best settings for the crossovers given my setup?

Any info would be much appreciated. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Also, just to confirm, my kicker sub should be a dual 4 ohm voice coil. I should have it wired in parallel rite?

1. i would use the crossover on the HU because you can tune whenever you please instead of going to your trunk to change out xover settings.

2. crossovers on the amps are considered active.

3. no because what you will use your hu for is lowpass for the sub and highpass for your components. the crossovers on your components will only high pass for the tweeters and lowpass for your mids. you'll need the highpass for your components to filter out sub bass on your mids.

4. only you can know. every car is different. just start messing around with crossover points. for highpass on your components try 80hz @ 12db/oct for a starting point.

Good luck and welcome to the forum //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

Thanks for the quick reply. So if you say to set the highpass at 80Hz, then shouldn't the lowpass be at 80Hz as well, so everything below 80 will be picked up by the sub and everything above 80 is picked up by the speakers? Also, for bass boost knob on the JBL amp, should I have that on in addition to the bass boost on the deck? will that overpower and cause problems for the sub?

not necessarily because remember even though you highpass your mids at 80hz @ -12db/oct, your mids will still be playing sub bass but at a lower db. so don't worry, the whole frequency response will be covered regardless //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. i would just start playing different frequencies to see what sounds best.
