Active Capable Amp

I had gotten a DSC480, and planned to run comps in front and have a rear fill. Decided against the rear fill, and am thinking of how I could run the Crescendo CCX65s active.

I have a Kenwood KDC-X794 HU, which I dont think is active capable. The DSC480 only crosses at 1.2Khz. Im thinking of selling it and getting an Active capable amp. The tweeters need to be crossed at 3.2Khz 12db octave.

Anyone have a recomendation? For price range, Im thinking around $150 if possible. $200 is absolute max. Other wise, Ill just run passive. The CCX65s are rated for 100rms. The tweeters are 60rms.

Also, when running active, I would use front and rear RCA channles, one for the mids and one for the tweets right? Would I use the crossovers for anything?

I have a 3 way earthquake x-over. Can be used for active duty. Goes inline before your amp. Set the amp to full range and set your x-over points on the x-over. Nice small little unit.

To run active, you are going to need an amplifier that allows you to run a bandpass (i.e. both high and low pass) on at least 2 of the channels. My suggestion would be to purchase an active crossover if you want to run active. It probably fits your budget a little better.

I might have a local buyer for the DSC480, which is where the majority of the money was coming from. Only have about ~$50 to add to it.

Have any recomendations for active crossovers that would work with the CCX65s?

Would I even really notice much of a difference anyway? Cause doesnt the crossover stop the mids from playing over 3200, and the tweets from playing under it?

A 3 way x-over, like the one I have available, has:

Low pass - for sub duty

Band pass (has high pass and low pass) - for mids

High pass - for tweeters

And yes you will notice a difference because these are set to be much more accurate than the ones on the amps themselves. You will be able to "blend" the freq's so they sound correct. You can use 3 separate amps to power the 3 separate sets of speakers.

X2. I have found that even the cheapest of active crossovers is TONS better than 90% of the amplifier onboard crossovers that I have had the misfortune of dealing with. Granted, these days, I use an active head unit. Sadly, the two choices for a new active head unit are an Alpine that you can add Imprint to or the uber expensive Pioneer DEX-P99RS.

Do they have to have two seperate signals going to them, or is it like passive ones?

Going passive, I was going to bridge the dsc480 and just keep the gains way down. If I need to use all four channels, then Id be under powering the mids by quite a bit.

Soundstream DTR4.500 prob the cheapest decent amp that is bandpass. I'm using one currently and sounds good running my 6.5's active. Oh I have the same HU BTW

Would an active crossover work with the stock HU, like a LOC with the filters built in? The dash kits for my car look like crap, and I miss my steering wheel controls. I could sell the HU out of my truck to get the crossover, and move my x794 to the truck, and put the stock HU back in the Altima.

Would that have any major affect on the SQ or output?

The stock system had 2 ohm speakers, so the HU would be as well if that matters.

Doubt Id do it, but it would be considered if there werent really any trade offs.
