Sooo ive never really installed on anything newer than a 98 sooo here it is.

So my buddy just bought a 2000 cavy 2 dr and when he brought it to the install shop to get the harness for it they told him he needed one that cost 80 bucks because of everything is hooked to the hu?(he was telling me something about air bag, all warning lights, etc.

so my ? is where can i get this harness cheaper, and how much different is it than installing a regular harness? the guy at the install shop scared the shit outta my buddy(because "if you mess up one little wire, it will fuk up your whole car") idk if it was because he wanted my buddy to get it installed so he gets his $, or he was really telling it how it is. I know the oer shit for it, just wondering how hard it may be!

Thanks,

Nick

it's not as bad as he made it sound. i had the same problem today actually with my 2000 impala. i needed what is called a GMCO and it provides the data signals that the factory headunit normally controls. they run about 80-100 for my impala so i'd assume they'd be the same for you....

mine was just like a normal harness plug- easy as hell- you'll do fine with it, just get the equipment you need the first time- i saw a few shortcuts to bypass needing one of these but it can really do some damage- just get it now and you'll be satisfied

someone will correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure you dont need that harness. I did a 04ish alero and we were told we needed that cause "everything runs through the headunit". Turns out, the only thing that doesnt work now is that beeping noise when you leave your headlights on or open your door with the keys in the ignition.

for my impala, i took the factory hu off and the car wouldnt even crank.......go figure.....i read that the abs and everything has functions going through the hu...

oh i had one on hand because of everything i heard bout that- i had a t-harness from cardomain too- i'm gonna return that now though i dont need it

the GM vehicles (olds may be one? haha) have a "Class II data bus" that transmitts some things through the HU like the oil lights, oil pressure seat belt, etc.(from the guy at the shop supposively air bag) so this peripheral GMCO harness i guess decodes that shit....?

I'd like to hear more on what it actually does

EXACTLY! air bags i was told we not controlled by this though, add abs to that list though.... heres how i can tell what some of the things are- in my impala- hold down the display button and a menu will come on the screen giving you options on what you can reset and such

I've heard of people just extending the wires and sticking the old HU in the trunk.

Certainly cheaper than the 80 bucks for that other harness thingy.
