A/B vs Class D for Subwoofer SQ

I do have a couple of questions for you THUMPPER. Did you run the first generation Class D power amplifiers that came out in the 90s? If so, did you find that they indeed sounded "different"?

I find it odd how the same shops that used to chastise them now recommend them because they are "easier on the electrical system!" They always seem to leave out that tiny little part of how maximum current draw is maximum current draw and you better have the electrical upgrades to handle it! My bad, they recommend a 5 farad cap instead:confused: //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

If you can hear the subwoofer in a "SQ" system, then you have bigger issues. Amp class is irrelevant and your ears are horrible, deceiving liars. And your memory is worse than your ears.

If someone is trying to convince you to join the the 'amp class sonics' dogma, they're probably mostly interested in your $$$$$$. Either that, or they're not in tune with the known factors that make an amp have a quality of sound to it.

But thanks for your post, I can now scratch Image Dynamics off my list of ethical car audio amp manufacturers.

ethical car audio amp manufacturers.
I can't decide if that is ironic or a paradox to call a car audio amplifier manufacturer "ethical" this day and age.....

Hell, even back in 2000 "Made in the USA" meant assembled in the USA with a circuit board that was manufactured in Korea or some other overseas country. What about other modern amp manufacturers that CEA rate their power output @ 4 ohms, but provide an unrealistic 2 ohm rating that is not CEA certified?

I could go on for a while, but it is lunch time:laugh:

Thats interesting, so are you saying that NOBODY has the ability to detect changes in sound and the ability to remember those changes? Seems like you already assumed that every persons hearing and memory are created equal..

You don't remember back in ECA's heyday when ID actually blamed class D amps for blowing their subs?

They used to specifically recommend against using class D amps on the IDMax.

I actually do remember that. They push class a/b like no tomorrow. I had a pair of IDMAX 12's, and I'm member number 150 or something on their forums. I wouldn't have bought a class a/b unless they said too... : / I still sold the amp for 100$ more than I paid though.

Were you a member of carstereo.com a long time ago?

I haven't heard enough sq comp setups to refine my pallet to the point of knowing any better. : / To be exact, I've heard 0

I'm willing to bet many are in the same boat as me.

It's a prefrence thing to me. I have heard plenty of SQ type cars that sounded wonderful off class D amps. All the bass sounded like it was coming from their mids anyway. I still have yet to achieve that sound. Don't have the dough to do so.

I have used both many times and can't tell a difference. Generally the class D amps seem to more expensive IMO.
