I hope some of you can help me plan out my RX7 install. As you can see from the pic, it has been converted from rotary to LS1 power. I LOVE this car.

Last time I was here was in '04 when I did a system for my 94 Cobra. I still have most of the stereo from it. Currently, the RX7 has a Alpine 7897 (big face), Boston Rally 6x8 rear fill powered by HU. Boston Rally 6.5 in the doors powered by a old Coustic 65x2 . The amp is in the spare tire well for now. I have upgraded the alternator to a KG3 145 amp unit and have a Optima red top in the bin.

Here's what I'm after:

I want to use the active x-over in the HU . Two small A/B amps hidden away behind the bins. Quality 6.5" comp set in the doors. No rear fill, no sub.

My budget is whatever I can sell my old stuff for. If it's not against the rules (no bids, just your thoughts) I hope you can suggest prices for some of my old stuff. I have Q-forms for sn95/new edge Mustang. Enclosed and stiffened w/ bondoglas. I still have the Vifa PL18 w/ frame cut down to fit the Q-form. They are too deep for the RX7 door. Still have the MaxFidelity Neo 1.3 tweeters (one has a bent grill) that the Q-form is cut for. Might use these in the 7. Have a MTX Thunderform for 94/04 Mustang. Have a Phoenix Gold 10". Have a Avionixx 800.2 T amp. The Coustic. and I have a special treasure ! NiB, never mounted Adire Extremis 6.4 very rare 4 ohm version.

My original plan was to build pods and new grills to mount the Extremis in the doors. It would be tough to pull off and I would have my foot in the grill every time I got out. Maybe if I could get Lexan door glass I could cut for magnet clearance but that would be expen$ive.

I would like some opinions please. Who makes good shallow mount mid-bass drivers 2" or less ? I'll try to get an exact depth in a few days. Who makes good small amps ? Around the size of a Alphasonik pma6002f ? Should I go to extremes for the Extremis or get something that fits ? Thankx in advance for your help and opinions.

Joe

Try to fit your Extremis 6.4s, or I could suggest some new drivers. If there's a way to fit a 6x9 with 3.5" of depth there are subwoofers that may work in place of those 6x8s. There are several good choices of amplifiers similar in size to that Alphasonik, but of better quality.

Thanx for your educated reply trumpet, I've been lurking here and see you have helped many people find better sound. The link shows the Extremis un-mounted and the Boston mounted in the baffle. My max depth to fit behind the factory grill is 2.73" , maybe a bit more but the Adire will require a custom grill. It's bottom edge hangs past the door panel 1/4" plus frame and surround clearance.

Still, your advice is true; there's nothing out there that could equal the performance of the Adire for the cost of what I could sell the Adire for. I figure they are worth $200 to $300 . I might be able to fit 6x9s where the 5x7s are now but again, depth is an issue.

Please suggest these choices. Assume I will be running the Extremis 6.4 and MaxFidelity neo1.3 active so a small 4 channel would let me run a sub amp behind the other bin if I choose to do that later. Home Page Is a link to a similar tweeter. The box sez they can play as low as 1600hz, handle 100wpc at 2kHZ and 175wpc at 4kHZ (going by memory, I think) so they are stout and should keep up nicely with the Adire.

BTW, what do you think of my car ? Oh, and trumpet, thank you for your help.

Is 8.27" L x 2" H x 5.93" W (the dimensions of that Alphasonik amp) what you have for space including another inch or more on either end for wires? I really like the amp I'm using for my front door speakers now, the Massive Audio NX4. It's 10" L x 5.5" W x 2.1" H. Another one of my favorite 4 channel amps is the Precision Power P900.4. It's 10.6" L x 6.5" W x 2" H. The manufacturer's web site has a typo showing it to be 9.25" long and a lot of other sellers are probably advertising the incorrect length.

For the back speakers we could go with 6.7" subwoofers or a very good 6.5" coaxial. I think you'd have plenty of sound from the woofers and tweeters up front, but rear full range speakers will work fine as well. There are nice 5x7 coaxials, but the selection is a bit limited.

Here's something that may work with the information you've shared. CDT Audio HD-6 6.7" woofers in the doors(2.75" mounting depth), your MaxFidelity Neo1.3 tweeters, CDT Audio HD-M6+ in the back if you build sealed enclosures for them, Precision Power P900.4 for the front mids and tweeters, Precision Power P600.2 for the subwoofers(1 channel per subwoofer). I also have a couple of ways to add 2" or 3" midrange speakers if you wanted to run a 3-way up front for better clarity and more output. The 2" mids can be added to the kick panels with pods that can be mounted with a strong double sided adhesive or velcro. This is something unique to CDT Audio.

I've never gotten a chance to ride in or drive an RX-7, but that was a really hot car when I was younger. It's still a hot car, too. It must be pretty fun with the LS1.

PPI is a well known company but I'm wary of class D full range amps, have times changed ? Damping factor relates to cone control, right ? Their number is not high. I have not heard of Massive Audio, I've been out of the game for awhile. Still, it's a A/B design and uses surface mount resistors. Not as much Xover options but that works for me. Price is right too. I'll try to get better measurements of the area behind my bins in a few daze.

How in the world did you find a Xtant 1.1i ? Does it sound good ?

The PPI Phantom amplifiers I suggested have been incredibly good since they came to market late in 2011. I've used the P900.4 for a year in my own vehicle and I only got rid of it to try something different. It was the same thing with a Massive Audio NX2. They both were great for me. I have to test products to better be able to make recommendations and I am very confident recommending these amplifiers.

I found the Xtant 1.1i for sale in the classifieds forum at DIYMA Car Audio Forum I think it sounds fine. I'm using it to power a 2-way center channel with the CDT CL-62SL components.
