8awg for subs too much??

Okay i was thinking of using 8 awg wiring to hook up all 3 of my Kicker L7 12s .....to my US Amps VLX-400(which uses 8awg for sub hookup)....

Do u think this is overkill and will it hurt the subs at all???

If so what size should I use 12awg?

It wont hurt your subs, if you want to use 8 gauge wire, go ahead.

Edit: If anything it'll be a pain to hook up to your amp, which probaly uses 8 gauge wire to power it. As long as you got some wire crimps? (these)

It would make it easier to attach to your amp.

16 gauge will sound just as good as 8gauge and cost alot less, but the 8gauge will have that sweet "Tim Taylor" "more power!" look to it.

Why not just use 12-16 gauge, its easiyer to work with.

welll...first of all when u strip the 8 awg and connect it to the sub...it wont fit...because i got a 12 awg on my L7 and i had to cut half of the tip of the wire to fit it in the hole...so its useless to use a 8 awg...it wont help..but wont hurt any thing....so wateva u want man

No real reason to do it, unless you already have the wire.

Otherwise, just buy some smaller wire.

Ya I already have the 8awg layin around and my amp takes 8awg for speakers (VLX-400) and 4 -8awg powers and grounds by the way.....

I was just making sure it wouldnt hurt it or anything.....

8awg is complete overkill unless the sub is like 40 feet from the amp.

12awg will be perfectly fine. its like $.20 per foot.

But anyway, I've always gone by my own personal rule when it comes to wire gauge. My personal rule is to go with the biggest gauge wire that will fit. The bigger the gauge the lower the resistance. i dont kno what problem you had? my boy had his L7's hooked up with 10 awg easily with no problems at all, the sub should handle the 8 awg without a problem

Oh it does then?? Well that sounds more like kicker then. It did seem hard to believe that their top subs wouldn't accept anything bigger than 14 gauge.
