Good point, although irrelevant. That's the same for all speakers. Half of the surround width is considered part of the cone, so an 8" speaker with a 1" surround has a cone diameter of 7". when you calculate cone area you kind of need to take in account the surround... so an 8" sub really is like a 6" sub without the surround... a 10" is like an 8" without the surround... etc etc.
