8 8inch RE's vs. 1 18inch XXX

im not saying a 18XXX will be louder hands down, but um a single 18 has more Sd already than 2 12s and the XXX already has double the excursion has 32mm while the L7 i believe is only 13mm
For sake of argument I'm not actually going to look up the Sd of each driver, but use math for an estimate.

2 12" L7s: 288in^2

1 18 XXX: 254in^2

Now, the XXX can move linearly a lot further, true, and it will probably be slightly louder as I mentioned....but it will not be an "oh my god" moment. The SQ department is completely different, the XXX is a great sounding driver compared to the L7s which, in the right install can sound nice, but in general are street beaters, and not focused on sounding good.

Why no one has mentioned the SQ on the RE8 is crap is beyond me.

Good luck fitting the 18 and it's box properly in your vehicle. It is going to require at least a 8ft^3 box. And you would be better off running a smaller driver.

IMHO the XXX is the only slight upgrade in this situation. And only due to the gain you will see in musical reproduction.

i was planning on haveing a Orion 2500D push the xxx is that enghf or can it handle more?? Also i was planning on putting some of that polyfill in the box can you polyfill a ported box??

The 2500D might be too much in your hands...

And you can add polyfill in a ported enclosure. But it would need to be secured to the enclosure walls.

Don't expect it to make up for using a box that is to small. Only a n00b would think of that...

xpl0it told me You could get away with a 3.5 cubic box, and then you could even add some polyfill to make it "think" it's in a 5 cubic box. You could tune the port to around 28hz and it would slam.

Hes who i am planning on buying the 18 from. So you say that the Orion 2500D is to powerful? Which amp should i go with?

No he didn't //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

12x12 = 144

144x2 = 288

288 = teh number he put in for the cone area of 2 12l7 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

To be honest with you, the polyfill might help some, but don't expect it to help that much. The Orion 2500d isn't necessarily "too" powerful, just dont be stupid with it, set gains accordingly and you'll do just fine - the sub can take it. As for the 18 being in a 3.5^ft box, ported? That's just not going to work, sorry to say. A 15" XXX would probably do all right in a 3.5^ft box, but a 18 would just be hurt by it. Do it right if you do it man, take yoru time with it, dont make the mistake I did and jump into the first thing that sounds good.

4 cubic feet sealed, 6 cubic feet ported MINIMUM for an 18. 3.5 is retarded.

Then you have port and speaker displacment. So You need at least 8 cubes total for ported...

Thats total minimum space you can get away with.

So a 18 wont work in a box thats 5cu.ft with polyfil and port tuned to 28hz? is there any way you can build a box inside a trunk? b/c i can get like 9cu.ft inside my trunk but the box wouldnt fit thur the opening of my trunk.

Yes you can build inside a trunk, but it is a PITA.
