6X8 Component Speakers

I've been convinced.

I don't need rear speakers.

which in turn

Doubles my funds for my mid-range front speakers

I'm looking to spend around $160 to $180 and I don't know where to start. My original plan was to drop a pair of Boston Acoustic SL80 or SR80's into my Cougar but seems that they won't fit.. I want high quality but I don't want to bother with the sperate tweeter installation. I have a Alpine 9855 HU, I plan to stick in 1 subwoofer in powered by a Alpine MRP-F550 which is also powering the mid-range speakers I mentioned earlier. Any Suggestions?

Why did the SL80 or SR80 not fit? Was it mounting depth? Can you go with a 6x8 to 6 1/2 adapter? If you go with 6 1/2 components you have a lot more options. I'm not aware of any 6x8 component sets besides the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1682S that can integrate the tweeter with the mid.

If you have to go with a 6x8 component set I would go with the P1682S or get a set with a separate tweeter install. It really is not that difficult to install tweeter separately and you will have better sound.

You can also go the 6 1/2 route. You would need an adapter like this:

There are a lot of great 6 1/2 component sets that you can get from $160 to $180 including the image Dynamics CTX65CS:

I imagine there are several that can integrate the tweeter into the mid if that is what you have to do (I still recommend installing tweeter separately). One that I know of is the Precision Power PPI 356CS:

Good Luck!

If you don't "want to deal with seperate tweeter install", you are looking for coaxials. I'm guessing you also do not want to deal with a cross-over install?

They say at Best Buy the only way they can install tweeters would be to drill into my door. I don't see much reason to pay more money to hurt my car's resale value.. I have no problems with Cross-Overs. I've heard

"You do NOT need to drill/cut a "hole" for a tweeter to be mounted. You can use a surface mount tweeter, OR, some component sets can be coaxially mounted (tweeter mounted in the center of the woofer)."

But that puts me in even a harder situation looking for a comp set.. Not sure how to handle this. Think I might be thinking to hard about this.

With surface mounts there are still holes that need to be drilled, they are just smaller (small enough for wires). They also typically need to be screwed into where you mounting them so there will be some screw holes. Regardless, it is very unlikely that this would hurt your resale.

If want components and you really do not want to have separate tweeters go with the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1682S or PPI 365cs with 6 1/2 adapter.

You obviously can go with a regular 6x8 coaxials. There are some good choices like JBL P8662, Pioneer Premier TS-D802P, Alpine SPR-57C, Infinity Kappa 682.9cf, JL Audio C2-570X, etc. Higher end companies like Image Dynamics and Focal have 5x7 coaxials that might fit.

Why did the SL80 or SR80 not fit? Was it mounting depth? What mounting depth do you have?

I might go with the Rockford Fosgate Punch P1682S or PPI 365cs with 6 1/2 adapter or a couple coaxials, there's a whole new world of decisions i'll need there but it's good to have a idea at least.

i was advised by crutchfield that the SL80 or SR80 would not fit? I imagin it mounting depth but honestly I dont trust them.. even if I don't know my mounting depth.

You need to take the interior panel off of one of your front doors and use a piece of cardboard to make a mock baffle. That'll give you a clear idea of how much space you actually have to work with. You could probably get away with mounting a 5.25" midbass speaker and 1" tweet on the baffle and save yourself some trouble.

At least give it a look, man...

You are going to have to figure out your mounting depth regardless of what you do.
You'd be suprised how hard of a time i'm having trying to figure that out. I might just go with misfit138's idea but I still rather have to go in once and have the job done afterwards. I need more info..
