6.5 Components better than Alpine Type-S and not too spendy

I would go Diamond or ID for that price range. If you are willing to go up to low 200s, there was a used Hybrid Imagine set floating around which are a current forum boner.

With 18watts RMS, you're not even getting the most out of your Alpine Type-S. If you don't want to install an amplifier, just keep the Type-S or perhaps install Morel Maximos (supposedly they sound decent off head unit power). But all in all, the first step in getting better sound is to buy an amplifier. If you want a recommendation, one of boner amps right now is Precision Power Phantom P900.4. Sonicelectronix offer them for $200 shipped. Honest 4x140watts RMS or 2x450watts when bridged. Enough to power pretty much any front speakers and a subwoofer with bridged second set of channels.

I would second the recommendation of the HAT Imagine speakers. I run them in bi-amp mode with a 2.2uF cap on the tweeter. However, it's a waste to run them without an amplifier IMO. Give them at least an honest 60watts, though the mids could take happily over 100watts RMS. They could be over your budget as the cost $250 new.

I currently have the Type-S on a Phoenix Gold ZX250. I was saying, if I were to go active, I'd have to use my HU for the tweeter power. If I'm going to buy the second amp and wiring for it, I may as well bump to a decent mid-range like the DD62s or such and upgrade the amp down the road, since 75 will be sufficient.

Deadener is something I may not do extensively because of the age of the car. I'm saving my ambition and money for such endeavors for my next car when my current kicks the bucket. Salvage title 98 Avenger. No insurance company is going to save it if wrecked.

Every single comp set in your price range that I head (or heard about) has people complaining about tweeters (too loud, too harsh, not enough detail, etc). The rocks had been thrown in the direction Infinitys, Image Dynamics CTX, Alpine Type-R, Morel Maximo, and Massive Audio CK6 tweeters. I don't know whether affordable component speakers from big companies tend to come with substandard tweeters or whether the passive crossovers were not designed well. This is why I gave up on passive comps and bi-amp my speakers. If you could go active or bi-amp route, some of that could be a non issue. From the above, I would consider cautiously Massive Audio CK6.
Has nothing to do with substandard tweeters or passive crossover design and everything to do with installer error.
