6.5 Components better than Alpine Type-S and not too spendy

My car came with the Alpines and they're not terrible, but I do want something better. My previous speakers were Diamond Audio that I absolutely loved. Sadly, they got lost between moves/damaged or what have you. Otherwise, they'd be in there already. If memory serves me, they were D661s.

The previous owner paid retail, give or take, so 130-150. I'm looking to spend about the same, but know with digging and I can find much better.

I've had good luck with ebay, so I'm not opposed to links there.

The amp is a Phoenix Gold ZX250, so 75(conservative) rms to play with.

Cool. I'll check those out. I saw some ID 6.5, I believe ctx65cs, on ebay that weren't far from my range. How are those?

If you search you will find lots of endorsements for the Morel Maximo 6.5s, which run around $170 new. The other choices I might suggest would be Polk MM6501s, while Massive CK6 and CDT are good alternatives. Not far from the Hertz price point, but probably you'll get the most value out of the Morels.

Every single comp set in your price range that I head (or heard about) has people complaining about tweeters (too loud, too harsh, not enough detail, etc). The rocks had been thrown in the direction Infinitys, Image Dynamics CTX, Alpine Type-R, Morel Maximo, and Massive Audio CK6 tweeters. I don't know whether affordable component speakers from big companies tend to come with substandard tweeters or whether the passive crossovers were not designed well. This is why I gave up on passive comps and bi-amp my speakers. If you could go active or bi-amp route, some of that could be a non issue. From the above, I would consider cautiously Massive Audio CK6.

Bi-amping is possible, but at that point I'd just spring for better comps. Active might be doable. I'm running an Alpine cda-117.

Would the 18 rms from that keep up with the amped mids and a substage?

I'm not going for a crazy build. Car is paid off, old and ugly. Want a modest system to carry over when my engine or ****** give way.

18w would probably be fine for tweeters

I wouldn't go for Morel Maximos. The only reason I've seen people praise them was because of a super deal Amazon had a few months ago with them. I bought a pair of their 6x9s for $38, and they're just not very good.

I think Maximos are hate it or love it. Friend of mine loves his over everything else he's heard even top if the line stuff. Others say they suuck bawlzz.

I do think they're overrated due to the Morel name being on them. Same with lower line Focal stuff. And the prices on those Morel Maximos now just makes it worse IMO.
