A buddy of mine is wanting to get some new subs for his 2005 Tahoe. He was thinking 2 15’s but I don’t think he’ll get as much bang for his buck since he’s starting from scratch. What’s yalls advice? He needs everything except a head unit; subs, amp, wiring, box, etc

Is he doing his own install? Building the box? $500 isn't much for equipment, and it becomes a lot less when you pay for services. How firm is his budget?

What's he aiming for? As loud as possible? I'd look at Deaf Bonce, as they receive great reviews on all their products. I personally currently run three Deaf Bonce Apocalypse 15's.

I did my brothers system in his car for 500. Did a single 12 ported on a cheap amp with a refurbished cheap pioneer head unit and 2 6.5 inch coaxials for his doors. As simple as it gets. It sounded ok. You’re going to be stuck at under 500 watts rms on the sub in your price range. I did build a box though. A good enclosure is a must have no matter what wattage sub you use.

Now, I never recommend cheap garbage, but I got ahold of 4 Pyle 15 inch subs years back in a swap meet deal I made, so I ran the numbers and put 2 of them in a sealed box on my JL 700 watts rms amplifier, and was kinda surprised to be honest. These subs are probably 40$ online. They actually produced bass that sounded decent. I put them in a sealed box, 4 cubic feet each sub. I rolled around with them banging them pretty hard for a week before I sold them to some high school kid for 75$. That’s about as cheap as it gets for 2 15s.

4 10s

MDF $40.

Then screws and glue. So like $520 total.

I would start with this and build your own box. This would roughly cost you $415. So, it would leave a little money for MDF and some wiring.

Id sit down and figure out exactly what all you will be installing for amperage consumption and add another 10-15% amperage useage on top of that...
