JL is a fine product. Good sounding, reliable, and strong resale value. MSRP is a little rough, but if she bought at an authorized retailer you get worry free warranty at least.Looking around here, I realize her money could have gone much further than the JL equip...but after 20yrs of marriage I know better lol
I always like to upgrade the - from battery to the frame. What's there from the factory is typically barely even adequate for your stock electronics IMO. For the ease of install and cost of a lug rings and a couple feet of 1/0 gauge copper it can't hurt.Right on, great info.I dig your no BS approach on this forum.
For as little as I have here, you reckon I need to go further than the big 3 with an alternator?
yeh i meant port area a tad smallish but yeah higher tuning will be louder i didn't run #'s but i'm sure u be safe to cut 3" off probably tune to 34hz or so, i like 35hz, all these guys like super low tuning and if u have 2 15's and listen to rap it's great but i just have 1 12Port is 26" x 2 5/8 x 13.5 + a piece of half round on each end.U mean cut some of that 26 off?
Will keep that in mind, thx for your input.
Subs like the JL are a bit more traditional than modern high power drivers and you often do need to tune quite low to get a good flat response. It's much easier to build a sub that performs that way if you don't need huge power handling.yeh i meant port area a tad smallish but yeah higher tuning will be louder i didn't run #'s but i'm sure u be safe to cut 3" off probably tune to 34hz or so, i like 35hz, all these guys like super low tuning and if u have 2 15's and listen to rap it's great but i just have 1 12and listen to some old rock even tuned at 35hz some songs don't make sub move at all lol..
Good call, most companies recommend on the small side.Right on Boomingrandpa, I feel where you're coming from & thank you.I was just going by the specs that came with the woofers. Although the one place I did deviate was in the net volume of the enclosure. JL wanted 1.75 & from some comments on here about JL listing smallish reqs I added .2 ft3 per sub. I don't know how wise that was but I figure it's easier to shrink a box so...
Sadly you sort of pigeon holed yourself with that box into not having any options for pointing sub/port in a different direction or moving it around the cabin. Often just repositioning the sub/box can make a more dramatic difference than small variations in volume or tuning.... that said, you could try to shrink the volume of the box a bit to test higher tuning... it would be about the easiest way.Well, after setting the gains using proper procedures & equipment I can say that I'm happy with the results.I have a few more days of playing with different eq parameters but my first impression is that it is tuned lower than any previous dual 12 JL setup I've had in the past. Around 30-32 hz. It plays the lows foe sure, and is a welcomed addition, but due to power constraints(both voltage drop & wattage of the subs, it doesn't play as loud as id like at the 40hz range with authority.
This may be something that grows on me & my musical tastes may change as a result, or... I could tune the enclosure a little higher to gain some volume as I understand it's a tradeoff.
I'm not dissatisfied, it's just different than I'm accustomed too. Neither bad or good, time will tell.
Thoughts.
Hispls, do u know of someone who wouldn't mind running the numbers of this enclosure for me?Sadly you sort of pigeon holed yourself with that box into not having any options for pointing sub/port in a different direction or moving it around the cabin. Also you may have miscalculated port length or are getting some loading along a wall or other hard surface that's making it tune lower than you aimed for.
