$400-$500 Budget, which comps?

I usually run 3 times the rated power on my drivers and have yet to have an issue. Of course you need to know what your hearing though.

I agree, it really depends on what you are feeding them, good clean power, at frequencies that are well within their respective abilities.
yup. i have 5 times the power "rating" on my fronts. they take it fine and i crank the shit out of them at times.

I currently have a set of MTX components, which are rated at 90 watts, but If i send them any more then 70 the woofer starts to make a popping noise. I have the high pass set at 125, so I dont think its anything I have set wrong. Do you think the MTXs are just over rated and unable to handle the power?

On another topic, Ive read many threads on this forum about Rainbow Germaniums. Are the CMX 265 better or worst then the Germs?

as for the last part of you post, the CMX are a higher line, but the Germs are a very, very nice set of comps, there are lovers of both for different reasons, but I think the germs are a great value:)

One last thing I wouldn't concern myself to much with the finities between the comps you have listed and are intrested in, because a good installer can make a basic set of comps sound better than a highend set installed incorrectly. I would dare to say that the majority of installs are not optimized and equipment is not to blame. the set up is the most important part. Not having your gains, X-over points & slopes, speaker location & install techniques ... all have way more to do with how the system will sound than the equipment itself.

My opinion, not that it matters.

no you are correct. the install is very important. you could buy the "best" stuff and install it wrong and have it sound like poop. you can also install "cheaper" stuff correctly and have it sound excellent.

I agree with you on that statement. my doors are deadened, speakers mounted on a MDF baffle, with Modeling clay around the baffle. I plan on adding more deadening when I install my new comps, and throwing a deflex pad behind the speaker.

Back on the Topic of speaker selction, Who sells Rainbow here?

Jeff, If you went with SLC's and installed them correctly, I can tell you personally that they sound great (not discounting other brands) and you can save a couple hundred on your comps. I do at this point want to ask what your equipment list is?
