4 channel amp wiring help?

First, don't compare the gain knob to a volume knob. It's not what you said but it's a common mistake. The gain setting is to match the amp to what your RCAs are sending from the head unit. If it sounds good with the gain lower and the head unit turned up then leave it that way. If it sounds worse with the gain higher you're likely driving the amp into clipping or it's got high distortion. Your head unit's equalizer settings might also be a factor. You want those all flat or zeroed out while setting the gain. Search YouTube or Google for how to set your amp's gain. You can do it with a $10 digital multimeter.

 
so got it all setup. curious howcome it sounds better when i turn gain on amp down and volume on radio up rather than volume on radio down and gain on amp up? shouldnt it be reverse or is it because my preout are really high?

can you elaborate on what you mean by "sounds better"?
