4 12's or.... 2 12's & 2 10's

yes plz. Paint pictures help alot
ok so we are trying to figure out how much air the subs displace while remaining linear...

to do this, you take the total effective piston area of the sub and multiply it by

2x the xmax...

IE: 10w7:

xmax=.6

sd= 51.4

so (2 x .6)(51.4)= 61.68 cubic inches of displaced air...

for the 12 it's 101.14 inches^3

for the 13 it's 170.8 inches^3

see unlike alot of the lines of popular subs you guys use, jl's increase motor strength and excursion with surface area in the same series of sub

what no pictures of it? I want pictures from MSPAINT
ok here ya go..

While your math is correct, you have to remember, how often are either of those drivers going to be using their full linear excursion?

The 2 10s will have more output than the single 13 up to a certain point, but you also have to remember that the 13 will require more power to get to that point.

ok but the maximum linear outut is what we are talking about, if you wanna take it like that, then a 12" shit sub like a sony is louder than a 10" DD9500 up untill a certain point.. does this mean the 12 is louder? no...

and the 13 will allways use less power to make the same volume as the 2 10's... and at full output the 13 will be putting out more sound using 500 watts than 2 subs using 800 watts... infact if you wanna go by the percentages, it would take 1100 watts with tens, to match 500 with a 13

there are so many variables over the top of this it makes me want to drown you....
oh are there? well since you can't very well drown me why don't you explain some of these variables, if there are any? enclosure design? that effects how the maximum parameters of what i just said are achieved and how flat the responce is...

i see no other factors involved with air displacement/output level other than excursion length and piston area, and since you didn't mention one it seems kinda like you don't either, its ok i understand the pressure to flame me from everybody

basically if you take a (2) 10"'s and (1) 13" and give them any X amount of power.. the 13 will allways be louder than the 10's with that same x amount of power... (not concerning enclosures so we will say free air)

lets plug in some easy numbers starting with maximum potential(thermal rateing)...

@ max power: 2 10's using 800

@ half power: 2 10's using 400

@ 1/4 power: 2 10's using 200

the larger subs of the same series are almost allways more efficient...

Back to OP... thats why 4 12's are allways gunna be better than 2 10's and 2 12's, you don't lose SQ because of bigger surface area infact you'll probably gain it, i'm willing to bet the 4 12's would be more accurate than the 2 pair at every level of power thats not above the 2 pair's maximum

xmax isn't everything..... i'd put money i can get 2 10's louder then 1 13 on the same amp.....
maby if you botched the 13's enclosure

in free air it is everything(along with surface area),

yeah maby you could get a 2 10's ported to beat 1 13 sealed but then again the 13 ported would beat the 10's ported. the point is the 13 will allways have the ability to move more air than the 10's and thus get louder in every proportional application... there is no enclosure (i know of) where the ability to displace more air will lead to less output... so yes the 13 CAN and should allways be louder than the 2 10's with less space and power

like... seriously .. dude.. read .. learn.. just keep you thoughts to your self..

im a noob.. i know.. i admit it.. but atleast i know when to keep my thouhgts to my self. and now is good time to let some of em out.. cause i know.. almost everyone on here thinks this way

thank you for your time

and remember ... no bumping durring the go cart race
